Re: General June Weather
Bright flashes and loud thunder only a few seconds apart before the rinse and repeat cycle. Heavy rain.

Re: General June Weather
There were reports of a possible tornado(s) in Waipu, south of Whangarei yesterday afternoon...
''Mini tornado' rips through rural Northland area' - Stuff
There was T-storm activity there around that time. The only thing that bothers me is that, unless they were separate incidents, the 2 nearby damage reports tend to suggest a west to east path, which doesn't really sound feasible in a northerly flow?
Not sure of the exact time, but grabbed this (zoomed) 2pm radar image...

Re: General June Weather
Thanks for the report Nev. I did mention the risk of an isolated tornado report for yesterday so not surprised.

There was a tornado in the Waipu area in July 2011.
A disturbed pattern ahead, I notice SE Australia looks better placed for the cold systems.

Re: General June Weather
Yesterdays high temp was set at 7:54pm and todays is (so far) set at 10:22pm and still rising. Pity those temps are a paltry 12.6°C and 11.3°C respectively. But seems unusual any time of the year.

Re: General June Weather
Indeed, Warm front over NorthLand then cold front coming in behind, should be quite interesting. Upper level flow seems favourable too for some good lifting dynamics.NZstorm wrote:Looking like the prospect of some thunder behind the warm front tomorrow pm as well.spwill wrote:Some thunder/hail for the western North Island on Sunday.

Yes, fingers crossed for a lightning show Saturday evening.
06Z 6pm numbers on ukmet look encouraging with all the indices favouring convection! TT 54, K 32, lapse rates 7.1C.

Re: General June Weather
Lots of evidence of heavy rainfall in my travels for work today. The rooster tail from the spillways at Matahina dam were not as impressive in the Edgecumbe Aug 04 event, but still quite significant. Lots of slips, washouts and flooding in the Eastern BOP.

An active line of thunderstorms forming on the front to our NW in the Tasman, something to watch for this evening.

GFS favours Taranaki and Waitomo tonight and tomorrow for the showers/storms. But no doubt some cb/thunder on Aucklands west coast tomorrow.spwill wrote:An active line of thunderstorms forming on the front to our NW in the Tasman, something to watch for this evening.
Monday morning could be more active for Auckland possibly.

Re: General June Weather
Best chance for a storm this evening looks like the top of Northland and the western coastline from Raglan to the south. Some thunderstorm activity onto the top of Northland now.

Re: General June Weather
Looks like there was quite a lot of activity just north of New Plymouth last night.
Overnight temps of around 16C here last night, which was again warmer than during the day yesterday.
Another 15mm here yesterday, which on top of the 44mm on Wed/Thu is certainly making up for the lack of decent rain prior to that for this month.

Re: General June Weather
I looked out the door about 7.15am this morning just in time to see a lightning out to the west. But cb line looked mushy and weak and not a lot has happened with the front currently crossing.
When you look at the 500mb analysis there is a shortwave crossing later today. That might generate an uptick is lightning probs.
Also another shortwave tomorrow morning.
June has been like May with the rainfall coming in the last 10 days of the month.

There is an orographic thunderstorm in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges. Interesting to see.

Re: General June Weather
Looking like the potential for the first severe frosts for the Canterbury region on Saturday and Sunday, after some fairly cold air pushes through on Thursday and early Friday it clears out quickly for some blue skies and light winds - bye bye the last of the aphids and even some flies that are still hanging around
