Much less rain than expected today, only 1mm so far. Long range modelling suggest it could end up being an unusually dry first half of July.

I see coronet peak is planning on opening again this weekend, interesting they say they are confident in the forecast for next week but it looks like they will lose what little snow they have before anything natural falls. Here's hoping I'm wrong

Latest GFS has a low level snow event of epic proportions next Wednesday-Thursday whereas EC has the precipation right up there but a snow line of around 1000m - let's see if EC comes onboard over the next few days

Hey Bradley, what freezing level is EC suggesting for Central NI region? Specifically Ruapehu?

Well it looks like Waiouru will get no snow on the Wednesday (20mm of rain though) but on the Thursday it starts snowing with around 17mm of rain/snow so going by that a snowline of around 1200m on Wednesday and around 800m on the Thursday...

The EC brings the snow level right down later on Thursday, more so in North Canterbury/Marlborough. but by then most of the moisture has moved on. This is one of these situation which comes down to fine timing.

I remember you saying the same thing leading up to last June's low level snow event where it didn't look like it would happen in Canterbury then it changed and shifted the night before, just shows to never write a system off too early!

Looking like a disturbed WSW pattern for the rest of July.

This weeks system looks active with alpine snow/thunder.

Thunder possibilities for Auckland and coastal Canterbury Friday but there is variation in the models so nothing certain yet.

The modelling later in the week is not looking overly cold at low levels for NZ Winter but it is cold in the upper levels.

GFS going for snow to low levels for SE parts of Australia tomorrow morning, snow flurries possible for Melbourne, looks a great system on the satellite. Interesting that Australia has had the better of the Winter systems this year.

Around 10:30am this morning I observed interesting and attractive wispy feathery patterns in the high cloud around.
Indicative of some Weather on the way, I wonder?

No NW gales here, well yet. Just a NE to northerly with some gusts but nothing to get worried about.
"Heavy" looking weather here today from the west with some intense looking 'stilton' cloud this morning in the NW Arch cloud over ChCh. Sorry, I never took a photograph >_<
Skies clearing around sunset to the west but some distant flashes observed.

So, I expect that yesterday's interesting high-cloud formations were a harbinger of today's strong northerlies.
Extraordinary to start with daybreak some fifteen degrees warmer than the past few days!

No gales in Akaroa today, nor coming back to Chch later in afternoon - wind freshened up at times but calm spells as well.
Period of heavy rain in Chch this evening - unfortunately hit me as I was heading through Ilam/Avonhead on a 50cc bike. (raindrops felt almost like hail at times)

11mm of rain fall overnight. Whats been interesting about this current weather system is how the wind has gone from dead calm to a gale back to calm again many times over the last 24H

I think winds were just tipping gale-force out in Gulf around 5am, but have eased quite a bit since then... 13mm here.

'Thunderstorms and strong winds - but thankfully no weather bomb' - TVNZ

Shame TVNZ don't have more weather-presenters that actually know something about the weather. Renee appears to be pretty useless in that regard.

Winds have swung around to a WSW and quite strong too, MetS still forecasting light-mod winds for our area like they have for all the last 6 months
