I thought anything around 0.2 was considered normal anyway but what is a shock is the T- max of nearly 2C above normal, just a continuation of this very warm year.
Even the locals in cairns are shocked at how warm there winter has been so far with day temps pushing 28-29C every day mostly.

Re: General July Weather
Kelburn's 157.5 hrs sunshine is its 3rd highest on record (also for all city sites going back to 1907) and is about 40 hours above average. Napier's 189 hours (new EWS) is its 2nd highest.Nev wrote:July 2016 was another fairly warm month overall. Eastern areas of both islands were still very dry, but otherwise quite wet for the rest of the South Island, and later for central areas of the North Island. However, despite the rain, it was also generally fairly sunny for most parts.
Some very preliminary July 2016 figures for the main centres:

Re: General July Weather
7 days with thunder heard here in Mt Eden . A couple of light frosts at the start of the month otherwise the month did have a slightly warmer feel. Amazing how you do notice a 1C change in the averages, 1C is a lot of temperature.

Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'July National Climate Summary'.
A mild month overall and dry for eastern areas of the country.
The national average temp of 8.6C was 0.7C above normal.
The month's highest temp of 22.3C was recorded at (surprise, surprise) Riccarton, Christchurch on the 23rd, and the lowest temp of -8.7C was recorded at Hanmer Forest on the 12th.

Re: General July Weather
Needless to say, no media publicity for Kelburn's very favourable July stats - just headlines during the month screaming "Wellington" for a series of events which happened north of the city in Porirua and Kapiti.Nev wrote:Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'July National Climate Summary'.
