2.2 degrees and sleet and snow here, I see MS have just updated their forecast for snow to 200m rather than 400

Quite a bit of orographic lightning over the west of the North Island earlier this morning on the front.

Very heavy rain and a few flashes here early morn. Grey Lynn recorded 17.6mm and gust 75km/h.

Didn't get the strong wind here overnight, max gust was only 45 kph. Got some decent rain though with 15 mm recorded.

Wow 88knots.

The jet stream over the Tasman currently looks like a polar jet and sub tropical jet combined.

The AWS here showing gusts of 10 mps (46.km/h) but seem a hell of a lot more, some of the nastiest gusts would had to be around 100km/h i would have thought. Getting some heavy showers too, 9mm so far.

the 88kts is just a bit on an estimate going by the scale on the windspeed graph
but they have had that windspeed in the past before (top of a hill enhancement)

Maximum gust yesterday at the Kelburn pole instrument was 107 kph, not very impressive at all. Local winds didn't even rate a mention in the Stuff headline stories. The wind overnight failed to pass our house's "wake up" test, too. Still very windy however with bright sunshine for the most part. MTD rainfall is well down on the average.

Disappointed here, slept through everything, not even much rain recorded. Got about 10mm, most between 3am & 4am. Not great winds either, winds to 22km/hr gusts to 40 max about 7.30am.

Roughly the same speeds as here, i'm wondering if the AWS is not recording properly because some gusts were just horrendous.

Heavy snow here in Gore and settling on very wet ground, wasn't predicted.

Didn't the 8am update from Metservice have 'chance snow' in their forecast for Gore?

Yes that's about when they changed the forecast, up until then there wasn't much mentioned. This doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.

Both Metservice and WW were forecasting snow to 4-500 metres, instead it's heavy snow at 50

Here we go again - the Stuff geniuses talking about "Wellington" weather events which actually occurred in Upper Hutt and Porirua-Kapiti, which predictably got the worst hammering as they were more exposed to the westerly component of last night's wind.

I see Cape Turnagain, Wairarapa, has had gusts to 100 kts (185kmh)!
is the unexpected snow to low levels a warm advection event (due to a big drop in the barometer ?)

That's typical of Turnagain - really hammered in howling westerlies, like Castlepoint. I have been sitting on our west-facing verandah which felt quite warm with sun flooding it and the wind orientation meant only odd puffs were felt there - the hill slopes to the west cut most of it off. In a more NW/NNW flow the story would be different as the wind would blast down the street more directly. Felt a similar effect when walking on a pathway near the Zealandia boundary fence - tall trees muted a lot of the wind in the lower parts.

I have to say that Met's 8-point compass usage for wind reporting on the website is not adequate for Wellington's tricky topography and windfield.

Yes, MS have 20.1C for Kaikoura Peninsular yesterday arvo, compared to 23.5C for Kaikoura Aero about 8 km down the coast in Peketa. Temp differences between the 2 sites like this don't appear to be all that unusual. This inland Kaikoura PWS about 300m asl also recorded 22.5C yesterday, which seems to add some credibility to the airport reading.
Yes, I wouldn't have expected the peninsula to be quite as warm as the airport but the town felt more like about 20C to me - pretty local at the airport I think. A warm and then howling night with some very rough winds. More of those rough winds driving down to Chch this afternoon, especially around Cheviot - sometimes didn't have to steer too much going around bends to the east!

Lightning to my west and thunder. Cell looks like it amplified when it hit the coastal hills. I'm right on its path.
