NIWA have a Motat/Pt Chev. observer about 2.4km west of Ricky's PWS who recorded 64mm to 9am.
Other NIWA sites include 62mm at Mangere and 69mm at Pukekohe, compared to 45mm at Akld Aero. They also have 71mm at Kerikeri compared to 54mm at Kerikeri Aero.

Nice wet day here too. I had planned my burn off for today but thankfully I did it the other day.

I see Whangaparaoa recorded gusts to 106 km/h yesterday evening.

Also some very warm temps in the Gisborne/Hawke's Bay area yesterday, with Napier Aero's 21.9C topping MS's list, which was also an August record for that site going back to 1974.

Edit: NIWA's warmer Napier Nelson Park site also recorded 22.0C, its 5th equal since 1905.

Richard told me this morning, they only got 6mm out of what was predicted and here we only got 11.6mm. all up.
I had to bury Dorothy last WE and found the ground was quite hard to dig to bury her.
...by the way Dorothy was my cat who was 22 years old and her kidneys were failing, so we made the sad decision to put her to permanent sleep. :(

Sorry to hear that mate, 22 years old is a bloody good effort though, pity about the kidneys or you could have got a few more good years out of her!!

Thanks for that, but more to the weather related topic, I was stipulating to the fact that the ground is hard and dry here, and we are into August and for a winter, the ground should be much more softer owing to the fact that the conditions over the winter months are less susceptible to drought like in the summer months.

Foul night Friday flying into Auckland. Irritatingly changeable today and got rained on taking an evening walk to a Shore restaurant that turned out to be closing early. Hoping for better conditions tomorrow.

As John reported only 6.2mm from Fridays rain, being such a long time now since there's been excess soil moisture levels that the lower parts of the Kowai river south of Amberley has not flowed for nearly two years. The Ashley river bed is growing over with vegetation because of the lack of floods.

More like winter today. Temps of 9-11C along with 6mm until early arvo. High of just 13C later today.

I see Whangaparaoa also had 10mm, compared to less than 2mm at Akld Aero.

A cooler than normal August overall resulted from a prolonged cold spell earlier in the month, which saw temps plummet across NZ, particularly in the south, and some long-awaited snowfalls in many parts.
The same system also produced heavy rainfalls in north Auckland/Coromandel, Hawke's Bay and coastal Otago. Later in the month, another storm brought some heavy rainfalls to some areas of the upper North Island, along with unusually high midnight temps in some parts on the 25/26th. Otherwise, quite a dry, sunny month overall.

Nev would it be correct to say that with an average minimum of 0.1C that would be the coldest ever recorded at the airport in Chrustchurch? 1993 had that record with 0.2C?

Sorry, that was error. :o Chch T-min should be 1.3C. Have amended my original table.
