Here's NIWA's preliminary, 'August 2016 National Climate Summary'.

A chilly month for the South Island, rounds of flooding in the North Island.

The national average temp of 8.3C was 0.5C below normal.

The month's highest temp of 22.2C was again recorded at Riccarton, Christchurch on the 29th, and the lowest temp of -14.1C was recorded at Mt Cook Airport on the 8th.

Bloody Riccarton again [-X.
I only got 19.1C, so there must be something wrong there?
I would like to see their environment for recording their excessive temperatures?
Southerly on the day, although fine, but thinking of summer, if it was , say, 32C here, it would probably be about 42C there 8)
