An interesting formation showing on the Canterbury Rain Radar over this past hour, looks unusual to see the system positively intruding onto Canterbury from the SSE as this seems to be doing.

Looking back 10 years ago I couldn't help but smile when I read the following warning put out by Metservice a few hours before the June 12 event which dumped 50cm of snow on places like Sheffield and 40cm of snow for Darfield, to say they were a bit off with the amount and location is an understatement so who knows, maybe they won't get this event entirely correct as well!

HEAVY SNOW WARNING

AREA/S AFFECTED: CANTERBURY SOUTH OF BANKS PENINSULA
FORECAST:

In the 9 hours from 10pm Sunday to 7am Monday, expect up to 15cm of snow to
accumulate down to 300 metres, with lighter falls down to 200 metres.

Looks to me like a low has developed right over Christchurch. What do others think? Is that right. Sat image and radar look to be supporting this.

'Eye of the storm' like radar image with dry circle centred over Chch; might not be for much longer though.

Pressure have risen steadily since 4pm, about 5hpa in 5 hours, and the SW wind has picked up. The original front is in the process of shearing over North Otago as the low centre pulls away into the eastern Tasman (more of a northerly track today than the northeast track the models were expecting), and it looks as though another front could be forming as the showers become more organised off Buller. Meanwhile the colder air southeast of Otago is inching further northwards.

I was up on the Port Hills this evening and it was beautifully calm, cloud base not far away overhead but a great view over the city. Looking forward to seeing what comes tomorrow and through the weekend.

Yes here in town its relatively mild, 8 degrees. Stars are out. Radar looks like the peninsula is doing its shelter thing

Raining nicely out here. I'm hoping I'm far enough away from the Peninsula to keep getting the moisture. Rather than being shelted

Yes I was thinking the same thing last night- 3 nights in a row of -5 predicted
I see Metservice have forecast -7C for Christchurch next week - seems a tad extreme??

Heavy snow warning for Canterbury Plains now, 20cm above 400m from tonight with lesser amounts to 100m so Ashburton could see a wee dusting
