Yes but the level in which it's falling this early surprised me since the coldest air is tomorrow morning but precipitation is blocked by central NI so guess this is as good as it gets for low level taranaki for this system, comes and goes but a spy to the east of taranaki around 400m has reported heavy snow showers on and off. 2c here at 300m and still rain and snow.

I see what you mean Tony. Just looked at the sat loop then. Definite rotation off the coast of Westland, spiraling down what looks to be moisture from the north.

looks to be beefier showers way out to the SE of Banks Peninsular, heading towards the CHCH area...so more shower activity might survive getting over the port hills overnight?

Doubtful I would say. It would need a wind shift

Nothing much here today.
....but observing the conditions, very cold air moving across from the SE, with the sunshine developing the clouds into a quite strong Cu scenario, which looked quite dramatic at times.
Thinking at times, if this was later on in the year, could be quite thunderstormic? 8)

Saw some nice mammatus clouds under a weak Cb to the south of chc this evening. Pleasant surprise for what has been a nothing event for CHC. Mind you, you wouldn't think it was talking to people, lady in the supermarket said she was buying extra milk today because of the snow coming >_<

Showers on the increase here now, just had a small shower of graupel looks like snow showers down Rakaia to ashburton way now too.
May well be an interesting night, probably the best slot will be 5am-10am tomorrow morning for snow.
Edit. Sleet intermixed flakes now sitting on about 0C

Probably the NIWA site there, may record this as this is the heaviest snowfall of the year for New Zealand, in their monthly, yearly reports? <3 [-X

Rain just turned into snow with that last shower. Big flakes. But then goes back to rain, so not cold enough yet but very close.

SE wind change has made it this far north now..temperature dropping..
looking at the temperatures around the central north island, must be snow on the hills around Taupo
