Interesting why no hail here, only snow.

A little hail drift along the fence line at home but that's all. Just strong cold winds and isolated sleet showers. Very hard for snow to settle around with such strong winds.

Steady rain here with 5.8C which normally always means Mt Pirongia is getting snow.

Metservice now in with a moderate thunderstorm risk for mid-north Canterbury this morning and afternoon, very unstable out there and a ferocious squall just now in Middleton.

Crunchy underfoot at Tawa, north of Wellington, this morning. Light coating of hail sitting on lawns. Snow and sleet showers. 4 degrees between 7 and 9 a.m.

Certainly some vigour to those squalls as they come through. Most impressive. Well done MS, pretty much bang on with this system

Would be interesting to know what the lowest September max for Auckland is because I reckon we could get it today!

Geez haven't seen wind like that for a while, the last time I saw gusts that strong was in Melbourne where big billboards for industrial estates were being blown over(but of course those were much more exposed). Had a few potted plants blow over overnight which is surprising as I thought it was much windier around 7-9pm last night.

No power lost here..

Good hail showers in North Canterbury atm. Working Just west of kaiapoi. Some stones reaching 10mm.. not huge but decent for winter hail showers. I'm guessing it's because it's getting to a warmer part of the day and it's creating a bit more convection. So the clouds are getting bigger.. was waiting for a bang of thunder with that last shower

The rain today is very snow like, like it has melted on the way down - very light and floaty. If only it were colder!

Was thinking the same this morning. Having seen some meltly flakes mixed with rain in Taupo last month, it was looking like it could almost do the same. But 5 to 6C compared to 2C on same car thermometer in Taupo that day.

The same is happening here too, started off as snow then turned to graupel, now getting some heavy hail showers but no squalls or thunder, though ive never known thunder to happen during this type of weather in this area.

-edit-spoke to soon, snowing again along with a huge gust

Lowest Sep daily T-max at Akld Aero is 10.1C in 1984 from records since 1966.
So could be a record if it stay's below that until 9am tomorrow morn.

Hasn't made it over 9.5 at my place all day, and the North Shore is usually a tad warmer. At one point mid-morning it dropped from 8.1 to 6.4 before slowly creeping back up. Ridiculously windy at my place right now. The house is shaking and creaking quite alarmingly.

Interesting to hear about lightning with this current weather system moving over Canterbury.
Nothing here but I did expect something from this aggressive system, somewhere. :-k
Initially, it looked pathetic as the indicators of the cold change moved through. Just a weak line of cloud instead of something more substantial like a Gust Front or Wall scenario. It had been southerly all day with some uplifts and some glaciations indicating colder air moving in despite the surface temperature being, or maximizing at the 16C mark. The SW winds that did develop would be the strongest I've experienced here, possibly as strong as the September 2013 windstorm from the NW, although no trees blew over, thank goodness. The house here did shake with some strong gusts in associated squalls that moved over. o_O

Same report as the rest, bloody gusty with rain, hail and a few little floaty bits being observed from the work place 3 storeys up. Went out to birdlings at dawn, swell wasn't as big as I thought it would be, but still was fun, recorded gusts over 100km.
