Where's that station Bradley? More like 45mm around our part of town in past two months here. A lot of the rain seems locally heavy wit recent events, very hit and miss. 7mm here so far today
That's the airport and also Jeff''s station in Hoon Hay is actually closer to 100mm for that period :D

Looks like this polar trough coming onto the North Island will play out as a rainfall set up for Gisborne/Hawkes Bay.
Waikato Auckland looking largely dry.

Yes its helping a little, but whats needed is just one fall of 30mm or more that can soak into the subsoil's, these smallish falls that we've been getting lately are mostly lost after a few days of dry NW, the fact that inland Canterbury gets a lot more of those winds than coastal areas means it drys a lot quicker. But you just learn to except the climate for what it is, and as a small scale seed grower its a great climate, not only because of a lack of diseases but for drying seed also.

The instability doesn't look to be there unfortunately.

But models agree on some showers coming north overnight.

Heavy rain last night in Spreydon, most of the evening and some heavy showers overnight. Seems it was coming off the western end of the hills, and we had big puddles all over the drive this morning.

Will keep a watch but timing not the best for us with this system in terms of interesting weather.

Fine conditions for Auckland today, showers coming through in the overnight hrs.

Looks ok provided the convergence is not too far inland. The moisture is near the coast and so you want convergence to tap into that moisture.

Looking like two areas of interest for potential thunderstorm development tomorrow.

A front coming into the west of the North Island later tomorrow evening may support frequent lightning, although this looks to be largely south of about Raglan where convection is deepest. Isolated tornado risk for Taranaki.

And the South Island (Southland to Canterbury set up). GFS drops plenty of rain on inland Otago.

Another cold polar trough looks likely to track up the country on fri/sat too. One to watch with the timing of the change

This coming weekend is looking chilly across NZ for the time of year.

It was nice to have the mostly fine holiday weekend .

Heavy rain passed through Kapiti at around 2.30am. No thunder here but Blitzortung picked up quite a bit around Wellington between 6 and 7am which confirmed social media reports.

Quite a good aurora showing last night apparently for those with clear skies.

Improving weather this afternoon with the sky looking more 'upliftish' than the boring weather earlier with this southerly.
