Not often you get a nice t-storm outlook map like below:
Metservice wrote:very unstable conditions across New Zealand today. A frontal system is moving eastwards across the North Island this morning and early afternoon, bringing periods of rain and a moderate risk of thunderstorms from Taranaki to Northland and across to Bay of Plenty. These thunderstorms may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 20mm/hr, strong wind gusts of 90 km/h and small hail.

An active trough moves rapidly across the North Island during the evening, bringing a burst of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms to western and northern areas. There is a high risk of thunderstorms with this trough from Taranaki to Northland and across to Bay of Plenty, as depicted on the chart. These thunderstorms may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 20mm/hr, strong wind gusts of 90 to 110 km/h and hail of 5 to 15mm diameter. In addition, there is a MODERATE RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS in the west from Taranaki to Northland this evening, with the potential for damaging wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h and the chance of small tornado.

A lesser risk of thunderstorms covers the lower North Island to Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, also northwest Nelson and Buller.

Wind convergences and cold temperatures aloft are likely to produce scattered showers over inland parts of Canterbury, eastern Otago and Southland today. There is a general low risk of thunderstorms in these areas as depicted on the chart, however the risk is considered moderate over Canterbury and North Otago this afternoon and early evening. These thunderstorms may produce localised rainfall rates of 10 to 20mm/hr, and hail of 10 to 20mm diameter.

No thunderstorms expected over the remainder of New Zealand.

No thunder here, sadly but a good drop of rain this afternoon.
Nice and warm this morning, which I wasn't really expecting but conditions looked not all that right for thunderstorm development for here, or inland despite the variations of wind convergence and low surface pressure. There could of been a few 'Clayton's inland but nothing like what Richard reported, last week.

Front in Tasman looks mildly active.

Looks like the Thunderstorms that developed in Canterbury this afternoon were more over the foothills.

I think so. My wife reported she heard a very distant rumble around 2pm, possibly from the TC area, which looked quite ominous when I was driving home about that time.

It looked very ominous inland this afternoon. I saw heavy showers storms in Mt somers area today. Wonder if Aaron got a chance to chase?? I was going to leave work early if storms fired up but it got to messy in the end to head out. So didn't bother

Still doesn't look like all the hype tho. I'm not anticipating much excitement tonight. Hope I'm wrong.

Frequent lightning north of Auckland. Every 3-5 seconds at peak. I'm at kaukapa and storm now out to east.

Been getting quite a few decent flashes and the odd decent rumble out in the Gulf.

Here's Blitzortung's CG's for the 3 hours to 10pm so far tonight…

There was a heavy shower with a single reasonably loud roll of thunder here sometime 3-3.30am as well, was about 5 seconds between lightning and thunder.
