Slightly different direction to the big winds in August&September. They were WNW. Saw gusts to 57knts at Golden Valley near Waihi on the coastguard app this morning.

Thanks for the report einzack. Here's a couple more related articles…

'Mini tornado sweeps through Bay' - SunLive
'Tornado damages homes in Ohope, Bay of Plenty' - Rotorua Daily Post

It looks like there may have been at least 2 tornadoes in the BoP yesterday morning. Apart from the one on Ohope spit, east of Whakatane, there was also another incident about 110 km away in Aongatete, SSE of Katikati (possibly also moving on to Te Puna about 15 km to the SE...?).

No exact times are mentioned, but I'm guessing they were around 6am…

Re Bay of Plenty wind damage.

The events occurred on the frontal boundary which was over Katikati about 7am and Ohope about 9am.
Possibly just wind gusts but in the case of Ohope EF0 tornado.

There is a system coming this weekend that may generate isolated tornadoes for the upper North Island.(early Saturday)

Very heavy arch cloud as I walked to work (in 18C warmth), quite amazed to see even a low risk from a norwester but it's a leaden sky out there. Coast looks very active for storms!

Frontal storms tend to have a preponderance of CG strikes as opposed to IC/CC ones as the font has a unified updraft as it ensures all air proceeding the front is lifted = greater water vapour content getting injected into the middle to upper atmosphere at a greater distribution.
Greater WV = More Precip = Holding more charge = The +'ve charge distribution decreasing towards the negative as it rains = more CG's :)

SW wind here now, quite windy just like the NW that preceded it.
26C prior to the change now down to 19C.
Yes, I heard a long distant rumble of thunder to the west (TC area) whilst walking from the house to the garage this morning about 8am.

Just checking my diary, I was setting up a MDU (Mobile Dental Unit) outside at Ohope Beach School in atrocious conditions between 0857 and 0927, I wasn't paying attention to the weather as I was working. The lid to the big bin containing the compressor and where we store hoses, cable protectors timber etc was caught by a freak gust and overcame the bracket holding it open and scored me good. I have some good scabs on my forehead presently. Thanks for this, will help with the accident report procedure.

Hmm, the 9th Jan 2014 20m away dry lightning event was near at Kohi Point lookout... Maybe I should make a mental note that Whakatane area weather doesn't like me ;-)

It's frustrating how much these stations cost in maintenance some times.

Question really is, do some brands need less maintenance than others?

all weather stations suffer from problems with the humidity sensor over time
but I think the latest version for the Davis is better than earlier models

Managed to fix it by cleaning around the sensor a bit (rubbing/scraping around it)... very strange. It's come right for now, will very likely buy a new sensor anyway to be safe.

Loving the look of next Thursday, scattered thunderstorms :D still a week out but interesting to see the cold air coming so far north in mid November in the GFS model.

Looking more and more likely that northern areas of North Canterbury will finally get some decent rainfall Saturday.

Strong jet 500mb on wensday/Thursday. Dragging that cold air up. More skirting up the weston side of the country at this stage.
