Wednesday will see 30C temperatures for the first time this season from Canterbury northward to Bay of Plenty.
Looking like a warm/hot and mostly dry week, except for maybe Thursday. Only days of thunder risk a I can see is Wed and Sunday for Canterbury. Sunday showing some really crazy li's for us, sadly just looks like a bad model run

Warm week for the country this week. Witch is always welcoming. Sunday end of week looks like thunder/hail set up for Otago and Canterbury.

Yes some impressive numbers being thrown up in the last few model runs, lucky it's the weekend to boot.

Warm day here with temperatures into the high twenties.
Bit cooler now as there is a light southerly outside.
Will give today's maximum here on my weather blog later this evening. :yum:

You never put your daily max in today? Just curious as my station is all packed up, ready for the move up north

What's all this "hot" rubbish that forecasters are saying about tomorrow? :?
To me HOT is about 42C, not mid to high twenties. :? [-X
I remember Jim Hickey used to go on about it being hot with the temperature peaking about 20-odd degrees.

Jeffs Weather Station has hit 32.3 - which is pretty warm for this time of year. I'm surprised its this warm even after that 38 degree day in Melbourne the other day.

This weekend is still looking like thunderstorms over the south island. Been keeping eye on it since Monday. Sat even looks interesting aswel. But gfs still flip flopping. Lots of cold upper troughs hinting us anyway over the next few days. It's a good sign for storm season! And summer

34C in Napier at the moment, surely close to a November record for them?

q-

Nothing wrong with using terms that make sense relative to the normal for the place(s) in question. Australians in summer often refer to "mild" temperatures when 35-40C spells give way to middle or upper 20s. Restricting usage in NZ to 40C+ values would make the term "hot" useless or obsolete.

Napier's peak today of around 33-34C would be close to a NI or even NZ record. I know Ashburton had 92.8F (33.8C) on 22 Nov 1958 (from memory), can't remember the NI's highest readings.

I think temperatures of 30+ qualify as hot.

The term mild is used in a different context here in NZ, 'temperatures becoming mild', means to forcasted to warm up, Australia its the opposite.

Yes, because we don't get enough occurrences in their ranges to justify their kind of usage. My point remains.

It's the wrong time of year for heat in Auckland because of the SW. But we should get 25C tomorrow.

Long range pattern looks to be disturbed W/SW for country.

TV weather mentioned a high of 23 degress at Chatham islands, (22.8 at 1pm observation) considering their all time record high is 23.8, this must be a record for November?

Yes. The clouds are now forming to provide the drizzle that Met Service are forecasting. dunno?
There was a persistent NW Arch out there all day but despite the SW this afternoon, it persisted, despite the southerly change.

Met Service are saying that Napier's 33.4C and Gisborne's 33.3C are likely the 2nd and 3rd highest in the NZ November records.

The heat bubble across NZ the last couple of days had its origins in the western Australian interior.

Looks like a blast of wind for the country Friday to Sunday time frame.

Thunderstorms/hail west of the South Island Saturday with spill over thunder into the lakes regions given 500mb jet will be 100knots!

Sunday could see squally thunder in the lower west of the North Island and also in Canterbury.
