T-storms in Otago/Canty - Nov 3-4

Unread post by Fujita Phil »

First lightning strike here in Dunedin that I've seen. Heavy rain right, small hail as well, and a few build-ups :yum:
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Nice to see lightning again for sure. Some reasonably heavy rain for a while in Riccarton, but nothing too out of the ordinary. No hail. Seems to be dying now, no thunder heard for a while and just raining moderately.

Plenty of Thunder and Heavy rain here in Bromley. Just been out digging out the drain sump and clearing the plastic drain blockage. Phew it's wet work. Great loud cracks of thunder when it initially came through, don't hear it that violently that often in Christchurch at least.

First storm I've seen this year.. nothing on the 'ol Melbourne storms(especially the ones I would of missed this year) but better then some Christchurch storms I remember from the past.. was a bit of rain / hail in Somerfield but Jeff didn't seem to register anything.

edit: Captain Salty I was wondering if that would happen around here. My street was fine.

Nice little storm! Right over the city. Just heavy rain in the central city. Spectacular lightning!

Saw one Cg from up 4 floors in the cbd, rain but no hail. Wasn't to worried to be at work as it appeared to me anyway not to be too photogenic.

Not a bad convergence set up today winds light NE about the city got that storm going well, versus the SW incoming and lighter westerly inland.
Simular set up tomorrow but perhaps abit more unstable in terms of what the models are showing, possibly more of a south of christchurch set up and moderate risk 10-15mm hail upper air is a tad cooler tomorrow.
Agree Sunday and Monday look juicy too

Hmm… Stuff say 'garage ablaze', but TV3 say just 'superficial burning on the bargeboard', although it looks like the struck tree and nearby fence didn't fare so well…

Also a nice hailstorm in Waimate yesterday arvo…

Model sounding here for Christchurch showing the profile for yesterdays thunderstorm. CAPE marked in yellow. The 700mb lifted index -3 while the 500mb lifted index barely registers as a negative number. After Mondays storms in Auckland I made the comment that the 700mb parameters are more insightful in forecasting in the very low topped cold set ups.

Also with the high CAPE at 700mb there is strong parcel acceleration which helps the convection to punch higher into the more stable air above 500mb.

The instability was still there last night. As the low scud that was coming in from the south was getting throwen around and turned into weak CU forms. Another risk over the Plains today. Finishing early being Friday so that's good!
