The bases of the storms looked fairly high. What causes that and does it make it harder for them to make lightning?

Metservice upgraded the risk to moderate for Canterbury. I think that's a good call! Already there is weak instability over the Plains. Once again onimous signs the last 3 days

Best storm near here for a while yesterday. Sheltering from the rain (up to 40mm/h at one point) made it tricky to get clear footage.
Here's the best of the dozen lightning flashes I captured on video and a couple of cropped still frames. I think I saw the CG that hit the tree in Hornby to the East but the video was shot facing W to NW.

Great captures
Hopefully nothing too nasty this evening as I'm flying home from Tauranga in a pencil!

Looking quite dark to my west, and the day seems suddenly to have that "hushed" quality...

Keeping watch. This is where living in rolleston is good. Doesn't take long to head out on main south rd. But I think once it hits Ashburton it will probably take a strong offshore turn

Darn. Geraldine might of got a hit or 2.
Anyway, not an interesting day as yesterday despite the conditions.

Think it was more coastal, I went for a drive seen 3 bolts of lightning hit ground near clandeboye with torrential rain. Lots of surface flooding in temuka, some in timaru. I think it mostly missed my place in rangitata as checked my weather station and just under 5mm rain. Didn't hear thunder but heard there was a loud clap in temuka (possibly lightning hitting something as power out on a couple streets) just before I reached thereNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Darn.
