Re: General November Weather
Nice stuff guys, great tornado Andrew and that's some mean hail Dean! I saw the tornado from a distance so quickly took a photo, noticed a smaller funnel closer to me also so a double up there.
Went through Ashburton but didn't notice any hail, must have been quite isolated Dean.
Will put a few pictures soon.

Thunder/hailstorms in Canty/Otago - Nov 16
I'm pretty happy to confirm yesterday's funnel as a tornado. Although no confirmed reports of damage.

The low cloud I observed just to the north of here was all black and shreddy-looking, hence my comment about "the most wicked-looking clouds heading north" posted here at 18:16.
What time was the tornado viewed?
Fantastic photos

Re: Thunder/hailstorms in Canty/Otago - Nov 16
Looks like a good storm and likely a small supercell there given the size of the hail. But multicells can produce hail like this in the cold environments. The CAPE was atleast 1000j/kg which is a big number in that environment. Bulk shear looked to be around 25knots. Great pics.

Re:
Wasn't it the 12th December last year? Chch city itself got two storms with severe hail as well as Canterbury. There was the two big supercells in 2013 two days apart in Dec one on 16th and 18th03Stormchaser wrote:Things played out very similar to the Dec 18th storms from last year

Re: Thunder/hailstorms in Canty/Otago - Nov 16
I grabbed the 4pm gfs sounding for the 16th off the gfs while it was still available. This is a representation of the Ashburton hail storm.
Lacking upper flow for a supercell but the shear is not zero.
Low level shear looks good.
CAPE coloured filled. Surface temp for this 20C.
