Not quite the 30C mark here today, but close to it. I bet Riccarton got to 33C [-X
Gusty NW winds here with some nice NW cloud forms.

Max here today was 21.7 almost exactly average compared to long-term data.

Looks like a lovely clear night tonight great for some stargazing.

You people should annex our island and name it West Island. Seriously!

However, we reached 32.6°C earlier, though we're sitting on 29.1°C at the moment.

edit: Oh, and I know Milford Sound gets quite wet, but with 176mm already fallen today, with over 110mm of that in the last 4 hours and more forecast, it's definitely a day for the ducks!
Yeah, an impressive end to Jan with 30+ temps from Gisborne to Dunedin yesterday...

32.8C Napier Airport
32.7C Gisborne Airport
32.5C Hastings
32.0C Ashburton Airport
32.0C Timaru Airport
31.7C Dunedin City
31.0C Christchurch Airport
30.4C Oamaru

Plus 250mm at Milford Sound Aero in the 18 hrs to 5pm yesterday, 187mm of which fell in the last 6 hrs.

Rainfall for Jan 46.6mm
Temps- highest 11th 26deg
lowest 5th 1.2

A month of strong winds which has kept the temperatures down. Near average rains has provided enough moisture for at least some grass growth.

For Auckland it got sunnier, warmer and drier as you moved northeast across the region, Owera having a better January than Waiuku.
Little in the way of humid weather this January which will have suited some people but it made for a cooler feel especially as there was more breeze than usual this month.

Should also add it was a dry month across the region.

Sydney had its hottest month ever.

We expect to get 35-36 degrees C on the hottest day of the year here in Hobart. On Christmas Day in 2015 it was 36.1!

We historically average 18 hot days a year (25 and over), although it always seems like a lot more......

The continuing SW pattern again made for another relatively cool month overall, except for Hawke's Bay. Dry in the north and particularly the east of the North Island, but relatively wet in Otago and the west of the of the South Island…

Hobart's climate looks fairly similar to Christchurch when looking at the averages. Hobart not as frosty though.

The weather station in Hobart is right on the water and would be moderated by the location.
In reality, most of the suburbs are much frostier, and many are at some degree of altitude, resulting in regular snowfalls.
I have visited Christchurch in summer a couple of times, it never went above 15 degrees.

Kelburn sunshine is a record low, as it is also for the period Sept-Jan. The manual Greymouth reading if it still existed would probably be nearer 100-110 hours.

Lattitude and geography are not vastly different with Hobart in a rain shadow like Canterbury. Christchurch has recorded 42C before, similar to Hobarts all time high.

Would be interesting to see January data for other cities.

Napier Aero's average T-max this Jan was 26.8C (or 2.9C above normal), beating its previous record of 25.9C in 1979, since records began there in 1974.

Napier's Nelson Park's average T-max was 26.2C (or 1.7C sbove normal) - its highest T-max since 1935 (note that higher temps were recorded prior to 1916, but look a bit dodgy).

Their average T-mins of 13.9C and 14.6C respectivly were about normal.
And its 297 hrs of sunshine (EWS) were about 119% of normal.

Edit: Correction to Napier Nelson Park T-max.

Yes, 41.3C at Timaru Gardens and 40.3C at Timaru Aero on Feb 6, 2011.

And yes, getting a bit OT.

Thanks Nev, pretty close to 42 then. I'll never forget that day in primary school in Rangiora, no aircons in those days, made us sit there all day, too hot to do anything.
