Climate for Little River/Cooptown, Banks Peninsula?

Unread post by Plato »

The Metservice's Christchurch page has figures for Banks Peninsula which is based on a weather station in Cooptown (near Little River) in Banks Peninsula.

It seems to have quite a distinct climate from the city or even other parts of Banks Peninsula, having lower wind speeds and often being quite warm in NE days that are crappy elsewhere. However, it also seems like it might be a fair bit more exposed to southerlies and rain in general. I can't find any long-term statistics, but the Metservice page has rainfall data for the past three months, in which ~350mm fell vs about ~170mm for the city. Or if we just look at the last couple of days, 9mm fell in Cooptown versus 1-3mm at the other Christchurch-area sites.

Anyone here ever lived around there? Does that sound like an accurate representation of the area, or there something unusual about the site of the station?

I think it may a good site for BP readings, especially in that area.
Other reports from BP come from Le Bon's Bay.
Would be nice if Akaroa had a weather site>? Ben!

I would imagine that Litttle River be wetter than CHCH, purely based on thunderstorms and rainfall on a S change or troughs that often moves up the coast then out to sea as it hits Bp.

Being in a valley somewhat away from the sea (at least by Banks Peninsula standards) it would have heavier frosts than most areas of the peninsula.
