I use the forecast 850mb winds to assess maximum gust potential. Modeled 850mb wind speeds are very high near the front, 80 knots (150km/h).

The warning signs of the strong winds coming are that the clouds are fair motoring.

Gusty ENE here today.
I noticed there was some lightning westward late last night and overnight from a front prior to this system moving across us.

Metservice a little off with their timings of the arrival of the severe gales, still easterly in Darfield and West Melton at 7.10pm, not really late afternoon anymore which is when they said it would begin, I wonder if the low pressure system has stalled in the last few hours unexpectedly?

Cool for the conditions expected from the oncoming front. Should be in the twenties, like yesterday.
Anyway, beefy looking thunderstorms moving onto Westland by the look of the latest radar for the West Coast.

Next year in the USA :D
Gone back to light NE here, so giving up on this as far as strong 150km winds go, thank goodness.
Today's maximum was only 19.3C, well below the forecasted max of 24C, although it could be reached in Riccarton ??? with 0.7mm from rain this morning.
Interesting to see if there will be thunder chances around tomorrow here from any lightning strikes? :D
