Re: Another Deep Low - Jan 21-22
barometer has risen alot from its lowest point here now in the last hour
and the wind eased alot too
so I would say that its peaked now in the auckland area
there will be a a fair bit of damage in the urban areas...auckland air port is not all that exposd to a NE wind...i.e the whole of the south auckland area would have been getting over 50 kts gusts

Wind has eased off here now.
A large tree has come down near my house blocking the street and it brought down several power poles with it.

Same across my part of the region, northern fringe of Papakura. Winds have certainly eased but can now clearly hear the wailing sirens of emergency services. Can't tell if they are on the motorway or Great South Road. Either way I'm sure they have their work cut out helping folk with damaged property etc.

That was some scary and unexpected weather! At first I was excited, because I do enjoy a bit of interesting weather and I thought we must be getting the edge of someone else's foul weather as there were no warnings or watches for Auckland as I far as I was aware. But then it was not nice at all. Awful noises coming from the church next door, I thought their roof was going to lift and lots of flashes. I wanted to go out and secure stuff, but wasn't game! No power here (Manurewa), but calmed down a lot now (me and the wind!)

there was a window of opportunity for warnings to have gone out (eg to civil defence)

The highest gust speed mentioned in marine forecast is 45knts so looks like winds have exceeded forecast. I got home this evening after 12 days away just in time to frantically stake and tie up things in garden save them getting wrecked overnight. Glad the storm didn't arrive even a few hours earlier.

45 kts in the gulf would normally mean only 30 kts in the urban area
I see Tiri Light house has got to 59ts gusts now
(make that 65 kts it peaked at there)

Getting pretty windy in tutukaka where I am and we are sheltered from this wind. Tutukaka light house must be getting some decent gusts.

A welcome 15mm here so far...
I see Akld Aero, Whangaparaoa and Ardmore Aero all recorded gusts around 100km/h before midnight.
Pressure seems to have bottomed out in Akld around 5:30am this morn at about 995 hPa.

Re: Another Deep Low - Jan 21-22
Ardmore airport is a long way inland in a NE wind
and so that means all urban areas in the Papakura/South Auckland area would have been getting 100kmh gusts too
which is why the trees down/power lines down, etc

NZ Herald reporting tens of thousands of Auckland homes are still without power this morning. I noticed the Skytower had no lights last night.
A very welcome 20mm here.

Re: Another Deep Low - Jan 21-22
There was another bout of nasty weather at dawn, woke me up. Still no power at my house in Manurewa and the neighbour's fence has come down on our driveway. I'm relieved to see my own fence and tomatoes survived. A heads up from Metservice would've been nice, then people could've secured their bins, outside furniture, trampolines etc. Sounds like a few went flying.

Re: Another Deep Low - Jan 21-22
I did give Auckland a heads up, over an hours warning..as it struck here first, on the west coastA heads up from Metservice would've been nice
and I did post that info to the MetService FB page (which they replied too) and so they did have a window to get warnings out to do exactly that..tie down loose objects etc
spwill : they need to put the power lines underground..they are doing that currently in Waiuku ...the streets look so much better for it too!
