what swell direction was that recorded as?
westerly or Northerly?

Yea I dont think the Measurement is entirely correct, Oceanographers looking into it now......

maybe it came free a bit from its mouring?
the fact there was a huge bouy that came ashore at New Plymouth is testamount to a huge NW swell

they would have had real time windspeed from auckland ariport showing the wind was increasing rapidly and the barometer was dropping quickly

anyway, its done now and hindsight is a great thing
but maybe they might be able to put in some checks for next time to be able to more quickly react to real time changing conditions?

At one stage I was 5 hpa lower than Auckland
Try drawing that on a weather map (northerly aligned sidebars)
