Re: General February Weather
The humidity will rise in Auckland today.
Looking like the Aussie heat wave has triggered some elevated storms over the western Tasman, often see this from heat waves in Aussie. Perhaps some elevated storms could reach the west of the NI tomorrow but they can be hard to predict.
500mb chart for tomorrow showing a big thermal gradient. Bay of Plenty 500mb-4C, Southland -26C.

Re: General February Weather
Could be the odd clap of thunder down south for my birthday tomorrow, but seems unlikely
Gusty SW came through around 6:30pm, from the gusty NW.
Not much change.

Re: General February Weather
You never know: some odd clouds around Ashburton at present - low grey shreddy things to the west, "explosive"-looking one to the south-east; occasional spots of rain falling from goodness knows whereNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Could be the odd clap of thunder down south for my birthday tomorrow, but seems unlikely ....

Big, dark cloud going up west of Chch now. Should be a good shower, maybe a rumble?

Re: General February Weather
Low overcast and still to be that warm is something so foreign to us down here, never get it anything like that.NZstorm wrote:

I think I heard thunder in the last few mins. Not sure what it was but was a rather loud rumble.

Re: General February Weather
Flip the base of those Elevated storms in Tasman is 4.5 KM ASL, Almost 500hPa!
The Blitzortung Amplitudal Waveforms are very strong, Lightning not so frequent, but with 4.5KM of air acting as an insulator, one heck of charge builds to overcome that.

Would be quite the sight to see a strobing cg coming from the base of the cloud to the ocean (providing its rain free).Tornado Tim wrote:Flip the base of those Elevated storms in Tasman is 4.5 KM ASL, Almost 500hPa!
