Re: General March Weather
In case you're interested it's 5 years tonight since the bomb low which affected Taranaki. We made a post about it on the FB page (https://www.facebook.com/MetService/pos ... 8888747832). There were sustained winds of 90 knots at the Maui field!
That was in pre-Himawari days. It would have been incredible to watch that low develop with 10 minute satellite imagery.

Re: General March Weather
March already, can't beleive it. Looking like a rather settled period for the next week with some rather interesting scenarios popping up beyond that..

Re: General March Weather
I was in New Plymouth during that and remember it well. Most of the nasty stuff was in South Taranaki, but still it was a wild night!

Re: General March Weather
The weather should be okay for Eden Park cricket tomorrow. But there will be a moist SW so a shower or two not impossible.
Precip on the horizon for many places from early next week. Potential for heavy falls in the upper North Island Wednesday.

Things starting to look very interesting next Tuesday in the east of the South Island with a low pressure system and cold front meeting...

Re: General March Weather
Didn't drop that significantly here but it did cool down overnight from the 27C high that I recorded here yesterday.

Re: General March Weather
Tasman Sea low pressure this week with the top of NZ getting stuck in a damp rather humid flow, GFS has dps above 20C later in the week for northern NZ.

Re: General March Weather
Christchurch airport dropped from 39 degrees at 1pm to 17 deg at 7pm after the record breaking high temps on 7th Feb 1973, so there may have been a record short term fall when the southerly went through. My personal recollection was that the temp near Timaru was 39 deg at midday then the southerly went through and a few hours later it was 17 deg and drizzling.

Re: General March Weather
I would have to rank today as Christchurch's best of the "summer" or at least that fell on a weekend. Warm, little wind, hardly any cloud, a perfect day

Re: General March Weather
Yes, it was, no doubt some members of the Pineglades nudist camp at Rolleston would of got a wee bit sunburnt today.
Today's maximum was 29.4c here, but gradually cooled with the NE then further so with the SW from about 7:30pm. 16c @ 10pm.

Re: General March Weather
Looking like a trough will dominate Northland's weather for the next 6 days and likely affect Auckland to Bay of Plenty later tomorrow into Wednesday with heavy rain risk. Isolated thunderstorms as well.

Re: General March Weather
A humid week in the far north, dp around 20C for Kaitaia for much of the week, GFS has been showing a lot of instability near the top of NZ in the moist air.

Re: General March Weather
All cloud cleared away to become a clear sunny day and the wind reverse back to a light NE.
65mm for the recent rainy event recorded at my rain gauge at Halswell.
