Re: General March Weather
A pleasant day so far, sunny spells , current 24C, dp 18C.
Longer range keeps the rather humid/chance of rain or showers going through the week.

Re: General March Weather
GFS model has strongest surface winds of 50 knots between low and Antarctic coast with a very large area of gales north of the low. At that latitude pressure gradients produce much less wind than further north.

Re: General March Weather
The wind is the result of 2 forces, pressure gradient force where wind flows from high to low pressure, and Coriolis force which is the spin caused by earths rotation. Coriolis force is increases from high to low latitudes (the earth is spinning faster at the equator). Since these 2 forces must balance, the same pressure gradient at 30 South will give twice the wind speed than at 50 South. Sorry if this is a bit fuzzy, I'm relying on meteorological theory i learned nearly 30 years ago!

Oh wow I didn't know that until now. Thanks for the info here.midgrove wrote:The wind is the result of 2 forces, pressure gradient force where wind flows from high to low pressure, and Coriolis force which is the spin caused by earths rotation. Re: General March Weather
Interesting . I suppose you can add wind gusts to the 50 k. The Northern side would have higher winds [against earths rotation] and with it wind changes and squlls..

Yes. I see Whangaparaoa has had 318.6 mm. Some intense downpours there.cbm wrote:A few Northern locations must be threatening their March rainfall records

Thought that July 1998 would be meantioned soon as the only month comparable to this. Hard to forget having to drive though quite deep water on SH1 at Meremere several times, due to the spillway operating.

Re: General March Weather
EC being very uncharacteristically bullish in its assertion of a significant rain event for Canterbury next Wednesday with widespread falls of 50-70mm, 3 runs in a row now...

Re: General March Weather
A drab miserable month here, the cloudiest since 1979 and the "daylight saving" months Sept-March have never had so little sunshine.

Re: General March Weather
March 2016 was a very wet month for the upper half of the North Island, with many places recording over 300mm, and some up to around 600mm. It was also a mostly warm month, particularly in the second half, apart from Wellington and the east and south of the South Island. However, the lower half of the South Island was also quite sunny, while it was fairly cloudy for most of the rest of the country…
Some very preliminary March 2017 figures for the main centres:
Note the Sth Akld rainfall figures are a little lower than other parts of Akld, e.g. Whangaparaoa recorded 354mm. A few other notable rainfalls include 591mm at Golden Valley, 412 at Whitianga (EWS), 378mm at Rotorua Aero and 359 at Kerikeri Aero.

It did not rain often in the month but when it did it poured.

Re: General March Weather
Forgot to mention that the PWS in Hunua recorded 608mm and another in Clevedon recorded 533mm. Meanwhile the Coromandel's Pinnacles was just 1mm shy of 1,000mm for the month…

Re: General March Weather
The month had a mild to warm feel here. It was a better weather month than the rainfall numbers might suggest.

Re: General March Weather
Yes. But it's easy to think otherwise because Google maps has an incorrect Auckland/Waikato boundary line.jamie wrote:Mangatangi is north Waikato isn't it?

Anyway back home from there. it was quite warm up there this WE. I heard from people there that Hanmer has been the top NZ temperature last couple of days.Mind you it would be cooler now that the southerly has come through.
