Given all the warnings and rain occurring you would expect an amazing satellite image. BUT it looks like a small feature. Quite strange really.

Already up to 64mm here, looking likely my record for highest daily rain will be broken (73.6mm on 23 Jan 2011).

Latest weather warning has an additional 120-180 mm possible across Auckland next 26 hrs, rare to see a rain warning that substantial here.

I was thinking the same but but more for the fact it's right across the North Island. Unprecedented rainfall levels across such a broad area.

Just hit 100mm here since 4am this morn.

Had to move the neighbour's car earlier, as last month's slip just below it has slipped some more… :-s

By text-message just received from Auckland Civil Defence:

"Significant weather now impacting the Auckland Region. There is real concern for rapid and extreme rainfall accumulations and associated localised flooding in the next few hours, while these downpours are slow-moving."

tt3.gif
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Issued by MetService at 09:14 pm Tuesday 04 April 2017.
Valid until 10:00 pm Tuesday 04 April 2017.

This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
RODNEY, GULF, KAIPARA, AUCKLAND CITY, WAIKATO, WAITAKERE, WHANGAREI, FRANKLIN and ALBANY.

At 09:00 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near WARKWORTH, HELENSVILLE, WELLSFORD, KAIWAKA, KUMEU, MANGAWHAI, HEN AND CHICKEN ISLANDS, MANUKAU HEADS, OFFSHORE AUCKLAND WEST COAST, BREAM HEAD, KAUKAPAKAPA, KAIPARA FLATS, WOODHILL, PIHA, MURIWAI BEACH, AHUROA, PARAKAI, WAIMAUKU, MAKARAU, GLORIT, TAUHOA, TE ARAI and HUAPAI.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast, and are expected to lie near AUCKLAND, WARKWORTH, OREWA, WAIUKU, OMAHA, PUHOI, LEIGH, ALBANY, HENDERSON, AUCKLAND CITY, INNER HAURAKI GULF, MANUKAU HEADS, MATAKANA, DAIRY FLAT, CLARKS BEACH, AWHITU, WHANGAPARAOA, PAKIRI, SILVERDALE and COATESVILLE at 09:30 pm and near AUCKLAND, PUKEKOHE, PAPAKURA, HOWICK, TUAKAU, MANUKAU, NAIKE, WAIHEKE ISLAND, INNER HAURAKI GULF, OUTER HAURAKI GULF, PORT WAIKATO, SOUTH AUCKLAND, DRURY, GLEN MURRAY, TE KOHANGA, WAIKARETU, ONEWHERO and PATUMAHOE at 10:00 pm.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain.

Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, GREAT BARRIER ISLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, WAIKATO and BAY OF PLENTY.

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.

This warning is due to be updated or lifted by 10:00 pm Tuesday 04 April 2017.

Many parts of Auckland got 100mm overnight. 82mm here.

I will chase any thunderstorm development today but I expect storms to move fast. Some supercell potential given deep layer shear.

Bay of Plenty will get a big rainfall hit today.

Light beginning to show a flood on par with 2004. That was our worst ever. With the rain to come today I think I can safely say we will experience our worst flood on this farm in the 30 years we have been here.
