Aucklanders are facing gridlock as workers flee the CBD ahead of dire warnings of Cyclone Cook's impact.

By midday, schools and university campuses had shut down, while offices sent staff home early.

On Thursday morning, the New Zealand Transport Agency said the Auckland Harbour Bridge might close amid fears of 160kmh winds.

However, on Thursday afternoon, MetService meteorologist Arno Dyson said it was unlikely the bridge would be closed.
but for Auckland there is just going to be nothing out of the ordinary for wind and rain

Already the wind has switched to SW here, just a light breeze. And starting to look like the heavy rain might miss us despite the weather warning...

Auckland area is basicly in a COL right now (i.e between 2 lows)
so not much wind
but you can see there is very strong winds on the north side of the low center now in the rain radar
and the low does now seem to be moving a bit more SSW
so the Auckland area could still get good gales from the SW direction as the low passes to the SE of the area

White Island winds shows there sure is a strong winds to come ashore soon in the central to eastern BOP

The coastguard (Northern Region) app on mobile has it. You can see real time wind on that. There may be a free link to it on the web soemwhere, I don't know.

Messaging a friend in Whakatane, who has just said it is still eerily quiet wind wise, but that everyone is "quietly freaking out about how windy it might get in parts of town".
Her closing comment was "its all seriously depressing and scary ... parenting is hard today!" :(

White Island still being smashed, avg wind speed still sitting above 100kph. Whakatane be in the firing line soon, wind speed is slowly increasing there, although still got to wait till the wind works round to the NE, that will be the worst possible situation. Awaiting game for those there and I see some evacuations have begun.
