Whakatane on less then 50mm for the entire event, have to wonder if the Metservice has overdone the estimated rainfall totals...

I see a barometer report of 987 at Whakatane now
which is the 10 hpa drop the models predicted the low was going to do
hence the destructive gales near the center

Hawkes bay is very exposed to a NE wind, and with the low pushing up against a large high to the east, there is a big pressure gradient on the eastern side of the low
so worse to come yet for that area

Amazing contrast between Tauranga and Whakatane right now going by data from MS.
Tauranga: Southwesterly 56 km/h, pressure 993 hPa
Whakatane: Easterly 48 km/h, pressure 982 hPa

The rain is in the SW quadrant, while the wind is in the SE quadrant.

In Napier its fairly windy and the rain has stopped. There were a few flashes of lightning earlier but i could not hear thunder over the wind. Lights have been flickering and there are a few branches down around our section. I poked my head out the door just before and heard a large tree cracking in the distance then a thud, I then decided to go back inside...

Yep Kidnappers is about as exposed (to the East) as you can get in HB.... but reckon 100kph gusts in Havelock... rain less...still got power (just).. long night ahead!

Ha Ha yes. Remarkable how quickly it went from calm weather at 5pm to very windy. It had calmed down over the last hour it has picked up again with rain and stronger wind but it appears to be moving quickly and the wind over a compact area, maybe more on the eastern side of the low as predicted?

bit of back tracking (sure, good to be safe rather than sorry, and Whakatane /Ohope and Hawkes bay have taken a good beating)
Have we been lucky?
"We have in a way. It tracked a little further east than some of the original predictions, which means that Auckland in particular didn't get affected by it, and it probably wasn't as deep as some of the initial predictions as well." - MetService severe weather forecaster John Crouch

Apr 14, 2017 5:35 AMStuff Editors
As bad as Giselle?
"Probably not. It was quite localised and fast-moving so they did get some quite severe weather around the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay area last evening and overnight as it tracked southwards, but I think we were fortunate that it has been quite a small centre and it has been quite mobile. It took a similar track to Tropical Cyclone Giselle, but Tropical Cyclone Giselle was a much deeper system, with much, much lower central air pressure. It also collided with a southerly front around the Cook Strait area which caused the severe winds, so it's been nowhere near as severe as Giselle and I think we've been quite fortunate that it was quite small and quite mobile." - MetService severe weather forecaster John Crouch

Yep, i did that first thing, but if i hadn't had access to modern technology i would have never known that a ex-tropical cyclone had just passed close by, next to no wind and only a couple of showers

Another 20mm here in Christchurch and the flooding could get quite serious, the ground just can't get anymore saturated!

Still looking like another 10+mm to come by the auto forecast. Noticed the heavy rain overnight with some bursts of wind, but not many. Haven't looked outside yet but I'm keen to check out Birdlings Flat later for the swell! From land, that is.
