Just had a scary overhead flash-bang here! Great little thunder/lightning show though…

Drove down to north Waikato early afternoon, photo of the Cb line which was near the west coast. Waikato river was in flood.

Yes, something could fire overnight in the west. Looks like we could get convection through to about day break in Auckland/Waikato.Tornado Tim wrote:Yup, worthwhile keeping eye on them and the ones coming onshore tonight.....jamie wrote:These new showers that are developing have very impressive updraft columns

Re: Active Low over North Island - Apr 14-17
Was outside at 7pm watching an approaching band with lots of flashes and the sky erupted in orange like fading daylight and stayed like that until I climbed onto the fence and saw flames, Oanui gas field was struck by lightning and an amazing large fire flare was burning around 7kms away, by the time we drove to it around 1km away the heat was incredible and the amount of traffic heading to it was at a crawl from the downpour and flashes, numerous emergency services passed us en route

Apparently the Oaonui Production Station is 'flaring-off' and is not on fire, as many are speculating…

Thunderstorm here. Hail, torrential rain (peak rain rate 4.1mm/min), impressive lightning and thunder.

Yes makes sense, the one we started following has lots of CG and was dimming lights at every strike. Curious though was that would a flare that size help the heat interaction with the band? The downpour was heaviest around the gas plant and it felt like an oven from around 1km awayNev wrote:Apparently the Oaonui Production Station is 'flaring-off' and is not on fire, as many are speculating…

Nice Intracloud bolts on the tail end of the lil line that went over about 15 mins ago. First lightning I've seen in a while.

Re: Active Low over North Island - Apr 14-17
I thought this thunderstorm set up was the best so far this year for the North Island.
Hopefully more like it in May. The rest of April may be quiet.
