Active Low over North Island - Apr 14-17
Cooler unstable airmass spreading into the west of the North Island late Friday with New Plymouth looking the best spot to catch a gusty thunderstorm/small hail. More colder unstable air during the Easter break by the looks.

Re: General April Weather
This cold upper level system coming through next 3 days could be worth a thread. Its winter style thunderstorm forecasting with shortwave energy defining the areas of thunder risk.
Kicks off later today as the trough in the Tasman advances into moisture currently over the NI.

Re: General April Weather
Watch out for the front late in the day, may have a thunderstorm or two with it in the west.
A waterspout possible in Taranaki tomorrow.

Re: General April Weather
Nice convection yesterday close to home, within the 10mins between taking this shot and walking down to the beach it expanded and started bucketing down :/
Can see low topped CB's with wind swept anvils to the north today.

Re: General April Weather
Some interesting weather over the North Island today before we get into the extended period of settled weather.
The 500mb vortex is moving closer the the North Island today and they typically are thunderstorm makers due to rising air and colder temps aloft. Afternoon heating will assist with the widely scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms/small hail. The vortex crosses the North Island tonight and moves away tomorrow.

Re: General April Weather
MS have a moderate T-Storm risk for the west and north of the North Island today…
MetService - Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: Midnight Sunday 16 Apr 2017
Issued at: 8:24am Sunday 16 Apr 2017
A low and area of cold upper air are expected to move slowly towards central and northern New Zealand during today, bringing unstable conditions to much of the North Island and top of the South Island.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms from western areas of Northland,Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, all of Taranaki and about Nelson west of the City at first, but extends this afternoon and evening to most areas of the North Island from Taupo and Bay of Plenty northwards. Any thunderstorms that eventuate are expected to produce localised heavy rain of 10 to 25mm per hour and small hail. Note, this risk area becomes confined to coastal Waikato to Taranaki, and also Nelson and the eastern Bay of Plenty tonight.
A lesser risk of thunderstorms extends over the remainder of Nelson, Buller, northern Marlborough, and the lower North Island as depicted on the chart.

Re: General April Weather
Thanks for the report Nev.
Good upper flow today, if we can get some low level NNE flow into convection then something interesting could happen like decent hail and a funnel. Considering a chase today.
