Clear skies here and the dewpoint is 2C, looking pretty likely we'll get a light frost tonight

I was in Christchurch today and observed much standing water on bare ground or in any little depression: don't think I've seen it looking so wet underfoot there before.

Also, as seen from Harper Avenue, a big old oak tree down in Hagley Golf Course, trunk seemed to have snapped well above ground level - maybe in one of the southerly bursts lately?

Could be a good frost here overnight.
I've been told that this area has it's own micro-climate.
Down to 1C already.

Looking very boring weather-wise for Canterbury for he next 7-10 days with no decent cold fronts on the horizon, I'm thinking we won't get properly into winter until the end of June going by some analysis from experts...

It is unusual not to hear thunder here in the month of May, no very cold upper level Tasman systems so far.

average temperatures here for may so far have atually been average overall (just slightly below average), for month to date
obviously a cold snap last few days, but we had a warmer than average period before that, to balance things out

For my station this month's average temperature is 3.0C below last May's average (which was an unusually warm May).

I am comparing to the last 15 years average for my stations data, and not just last years
(cold snaps in may is something that is actually more average than we have been getting recently ;) )

I was more talking about the outlook for the month ahead, you have indicated recently that inland areas of Canterbury will most likely be warmer then average from week 2 of June right through to July due to blocking anti cyclone's in the western pacific? You also said that over the next 6 weeks could see a long wait until the next snowfall occurs - or has this weather intelligence changed?

No change, but I think you have to see that in the context of a winter which has already started. :-)

Sorry I must have misunderstood what you meant when you said 'above average temperatures' for the last half of June,I thought you meant above the long term June average…
