Re: General May Weather
I sometimes wonder about Metservice overnight low forecast, and how can it be so far off. Was obvious it would be colder than 9C.
Down to 3.3C here this morning, Airport looks to have dipped to 6C.

Re: General May Weather
Grey Lynn 5C.
This time last year a decent run of thunderstorm days was about to commence. A grand total of 60,000 strikes occurred over 6 consecutive days up the west of the country 16th to 21st May 2016.
However 2017 looking quite stable so far. There is some weak instability showing up mid week (Wednesday/Thursday) but no indication currently of a big lightning show.

Lovely autumn day in chc. SW change later in the week doesn't look unseasonal, but I'm sure it will be blasted all over the social media platforms.Orion wrote:Frost followed by fog here this morning, a bit bleak!

Could be a good snowfall on the Queenstown Ski fields later in week but I guess its a bit early to be useful.

Re: General May Weather
Sorry for being off-topic but, I was watching Country Calendar earlier about a Blueberry orchard in Waharoa, near Matamata and they mentioned being hit by a tornado on July 18, 2015, which caused quite a bit of damage, including tall, 300mm thick posts being snapped and sucked up. One more of quite a few other reported tornadoes that day in this thread.

Re: General May Weather
EC has the snow level right down to around 300m in Canterbury on Friday for a time, with that low pressure system tracking further northward it will allow the cold air to penetrate further north then previously forecast

Re: General May Weather
GFS is showing snow to 200m in Otago/Southland late Fri/early Saturday. Just model output at this stage though.
Looking like thunderstorms will try to form during Wednesday over western and upper North Island associated with incoming fronts, but the instability is a struggle by the looks.

Re: General May Weather
The MetService rain forecast charts are now showing significant snowfall to sea level over the ocean as well as land.
For anyone who doesn't know about them, the snow charts at snowforecast.com are the most detailed you'll find for NZ. Their only drawback is they only show it where precipitation is predicted, not where air conditions will be snow-favourable.

Re: General May Weather
Yeah, 23mm here overnight, and very blustery. I see Grey Lynn's up around 29mm.
Whangaparaoa's had 33mm so far, compared to 15mm at Akld Aero.
And further north, Kaikohe and Kerikeri Aero up around 55mm.
