Models are pointing to a fairly volatile start to May. Could be some interesting weather about after the second half of Aprils relatively settled pause in proceedings

Taken abit of a rest on here lately due to looking at models all summer with nothing exciting to write about.. early may sure looks abit more unsettled. Cooler air hints in the models now to, as winter creeps closer.. Will be watching out for snow events now

The snow season not far away now.

A cool week on the way , a lot of below average temperatures for NZ this week.

Sunny skies but easily our coolest day of the year in Auckland with 16C and a fresh breeze. Should be a chilly night on the way

There was a great display of lenticular clouds above mount Pirongia this morning. Not often we get lenticulars here.

Be the first frost of the year here tonight by the looks. Looking forward to is killing the summer weeds that have gone bonkers with all the rain.

Down to 1.1C on my "station". Have been working for a while trying to get suitable exposure on a DS18B20, it's starting to track metservice's airport site about 10km WNW fairly closely.

I was 0.8 as well. Nice to see the summer weeds looking a dark smooshy green already.

I'm observing cloud that has thickened, darkened and lowered considerably over the past hour or so, to SW of here. Atmosphere has that "hushed" feeling... 0_o

Observing some very long and flamboyant "mares' tails" in the sky to the north/northwest of here at present.

We had a clap of thunder heard here on Thursday night, the day we moved in here and it was in the evening as we started to unpack our stuff.
I thought, What a nice way of the weather welcoming me to Geraldine  :D

Drove through an unexpected heavy shower on the way home tonight. Heat showers in May!
Auckland's max was 21C.

Sky was clear enough for me to observe stars and Venus at 6:15am; now increasingly thick mist.

Looking ahead to next week there is another low system to affect NZ, GFS and EC.

Yea not ideal on the back of what is looking like potentially a soaking in the next couple of days on the back of very wet ground. Still water yet to drain away and the water table is incredibly high for this time of year.

Its has been a stable May so far. May is perhaps our best month for thunder here in Auckland but there is not much on offer in the GFS as far as thunder chances go.

Current weather here is partly cloudy, mild 20C.

Models starting to show a real cold blast for later next week, although fairly dry it will be bitterly cold with 850hpa temps around the -7C mark over Canterbury for a time!
