There's a yellowish cast to the clouds that have been rolling up from the south, they look quite snowy.

Just come back from Pleasant Point.
There's snow in those hills all right behind Geraldine.

Re: General June Weather
I reckon I could see a distant waterspout out to the east earlier between Glendowie and Waiheke Is, too far off for me to get a reasonable photograph though. It had a faint condensation funnel so would probably go unnoticed by people out that way.

Nice cloud-bow observed to the SE of Geraldine, this afternoon. I'll see if I can download a photo.

General June Weather
Fog cleared about 5 times in Hamilton centre only for replacement to be drawn in from the East. Finally cleared properly about 11am. Spotted a jet trail in an unusual place right over or just East of Hamilton. The flight paths are normally well to the West.

Re: General June Weather
Looks to be a pretty decent cold front coming through Christchurch on Saturday afternoon just in time for the Crusaders vs Lions. Some similarities to the weather in the first All Blacks/Lions test at Jade Stadium in June 2005 when it was sleeting during the game, from memory that one had snow down to about 200m asl and 850hpa temps down to -7C, similar to this one being forecast if GFS is to believed 4 days out...

Re: General June Weather
European showing a polar blast mid next week? A blocking high in the Australian bight tends to be a good signal for some cold air onto NZ.

Cool to cold airflow coming around high pressure to the west of NZ for the next week. Will watch next week for anything particularly cold

Re: General June Weather
Very interesting that they put so much weight into GFS, certainly during normal winters it is normally very innacurate indeed more then 4 days out, EC for me usually shows alot more consistency and definately in the last month or so. Perhaps they look at EC as well who knows...tunster wrote:Relevant post on possibility of cold outbreak mid week: https://www.facebook.com/MetService/pos ... 2351259818

Re: General June Weather
The GFS has improved on what it used to be. Professional Meteorologists use it now whereas 5 years ago i doubt they would have.Bradley wrote:Very interesting that they put so much weight into GFS, certainly during normal winters it is normally very innacurate indeed more then 4 days out, EC for me usually shows alot more consistency and definately in the last month or so. The organisations who supply these models are working to improve them all the time. The GFS is a remarkable model considering its freely available.

How the weather model information is used is just as important.NZstorm wrote:.

GFS showing a cold trough to catch the SE of the SI later Tuesday/Wednesday am, snow on the hills there.
A pleasant run of weather lately in Auckland, currently a mild 16C, low 8.5C

Re: General June Weather
Polar jet stream moving onto NZ Tuesday. Still looking like snow on the Southland/Otago hills.
Plenty of wind with this system and some lightning in the west of the country given cold 500mb temps.
