850mb chart for midday Thursday. A cold front spreads cold air/precip northwards over the South Island.

Looks like the direction and timing of that low will kill off any cold air moving up the country on Thursday, no hope of any low level snow for Canterbury now, at least going by the latest models...

By Thursday virtually the entire country will be under a storm cloud. Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Northland and Canterbury are expected to be the worst affected.

Niwa is expecting up to 62mm and 60.8mm of rain to fall in Whangarei and Kaitaia on Thursday and 21.8mm for Auckland.
I think 21.9mm for Auckland looks more likely ;)

Quite a temperature difference across the Auckland region overnight. I see Whangaparaoa was around 13C, but the min was 6.3C here.

I love how someone has edited the Wikipedia page for Explosive Cyclogenesis to explain the frequent misuse of the term "weather bomb" by NZ media

Excellent day for the Lions game here. Fine with just a light refreshing breeze that isn't cold. UK accents heard from all directions on the street.

the media made a huge thing out of this weather coming
today was supposed to be gales and heavy rain according to the media (for Auckland)

often though the rain is delayed a bit from the north (for Auckland)

it is coming though, the cold front from the southern ocean is going to push everything onto the NI :)

Coldest morning of the year so far down this way followed by incoming cloud, which if it hangs round will make for a cold ol' day.
Forecast was for it to become cloudy during the day, so it might be here to stay.
So currently overcast and -1.1°C.

Very localised fog, 95% of Christchurch is clear, a fog bank lies to the western fringe of town

In contrast to the summery North Canterbury, South Canterbury is still shivering, with Timaru on 2.9°C.
Here in North Otago, we're sitting on 3.2°C.
Went for a run to try to warm myself up and our local lagoon is still frozen at 1:30pm!

Correct.
It never got above zero here until about noon here and now it only sits on 3.9C
Thick cloud cover with a NW Arch over to the west over Mt. Peel and hardly any wind.
Mammatus layers in the cloud plus stripy bits feeding into the mamma at the moment overhead.

You get a lot of that over Heathrow.
I noticed that here the other week a plane heading north did a complete U turn and buggered off back to where it came from. 0_o

Pushing 20 degrees at Little River, nearly 10 times warmer than Timaru as at 2:15pm. Amazing.

Still cold and still down here with the sun trying to poke through the edge of the NW Arch which is rather thick with some nice forms in it. Might crack 5C if we're lucky 8)
