Re: General July Weather
Warning been issued for Auckland:
This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
AUCKLAND CITY, WAIKATO, WAITAKERE and FRANKLIN.
At 04:30 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near AUCKLAND, MANUKAU HEADS, AWHITU and AUCKLAND AIRPORT.
These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the eastsoutheast, and are expected to lie near PAPAKURA, MANUKAU, DRURY and AUCKLAND AIRPORT at 05:00 pm and near HUNUA, DRURY, THE HUNUA RANGES and ARARIMU at 05:30 pm.
These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain.
Torrential rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.

Re: General July Weather
Unfortunately I was stuck at work, could see/hear it outside but missed the action at home around 5pm - thunder and hail, plus the highest rain rate in my weather station's 7.5 year history - 427 mm/hr!!
Previous record was around half that, at 226 mm/hr.

Here's a few highlights of the CB's over South Auckland. On the menu tonight: Thunder and lightning served on a platter of heavy rain combined with rather large hail.

Interesting structures, couple of nice lightning bolts also on my way driving back home. Didn't get those on camera.

Re: General July Weather
Amazing photos guys, quite the evening show for you up in Auckland!
Looking at the BOM and GFS Tuesday to Wednesday as well, inland parts of the South Island look in for some decent snow at this stage and certainly looks cold enough at the coast if there's moisture.

Re: General July Weather
The next significant shortwave in the Tasman will be Saturday. Should see lots of lightning in the Tasman again and storms could reach the north of NZ late Saturday.
49mm here for the event so far. Hoping for less showers and more sun today.
