Coldest day of the year (so far) yesterday. Reached 3.4°C just after 10pm, and that felt a long way off when it was 1.8°C at 1pm. And with having some drizzle when air temp was -1.6°C made for a rather cold and slippery day. A friend headed out for a run at 10am, but turned round after 400m cause was just like running on an ice rink...
Only 5 days so far this month where we've hit 10°C, so flying through my wood pile.....

Been rather a wet day here, MS was onto it with their 20 odd mm.
I see a shallow low off the Canterbury coast probably responsible.
There was some red on the radar but we didn't get that here.
Rain-band seems to of 'just hung around' over South Canterbury this afternoon, after coming in from the north this morning. Light SW here. 14.5mm to 5:30pm.

I see the max is 17C tomorrow for Auckland, possibly get that today too. Always happy to be getting through July with milder temps.

Some colder upper air reaches the North Island from late tomorrow into Friday. A few squally thunderstorms on the cards for the west and north.

Cold upper air across the North Island tomorrow. There is a shortwave approaching around the middle of the day tomorrow so some squally thundery cells in the west.

Bit of a rarity for us lately here getting to double digits for just the 2nd time in the last 30 days. Hard to remember the last time we've had so few mild days in winter. When I last looked a couple of days ago we were 1.5 degrees down on our usual July max, and 1 degree down on the mean.

This is the 3rd month this year to reach 200 mm rainfall here. Looks like the weather stays unsettled for the rest of the month.

Plenty of lightning in the Tasman this morning.

The system will weaken a bit by the time it gets here. But the lapse rate will be around 7.5C which is condusive to lightning so we will see if we can get a storm in the Auckland vicinity tonight/early morning.

An unsettled July, your area looking particularly wet. I see Whangaporoa is near 110mm.
Might get our first frost of the month here this weekend, a bit far out but Sunday morning could produce frost in the Auckland area.

Will keep a watch for a Tstorm here in the overnight hrs tonight

Quite a bit of Lightning going on the Tasman for the sure this morning, resulting Thunderstorm Outlook looks quite good for the West Coast :)

Most of the thunderstorms are now north of Fiordland, but there remains a moderate risk of further thunderstorms for Fiordland this morning. For northern Fiordland, Westland, Buller and northwest Nelson there is a high risk of thunderstorms this morning and afternoon. The risk reduces to moderate this evening. As the fronts spread onto the North Island this evening there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for western Whanganui, Taranaki, Waitomo, coastal Waikato and western Auckland this evening and tonight. These thunderstorms are likely to be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25mm per hour and small hail.

This evening and tonight there is a low risk of thunderstorms about Kapiti,Horowhenua, western Manawatu, eastern Whanganui and the west coast of Northland.

No other areas of severe convection or thunderstorms are expected.

The upper flow is very marginal tonight over Auckland. 500mb wind now looking to be 25knots which for a winter thunderstorm set up is weak. I like to see 40 knots +.

Stronger upper flow vents the cb's aloft and increases the lift.

The forecast of rain, possible heavy for ChCh on Thursday is concerning. The Heathcote basins at the foot of the Port hills are full from the weekend and will take a few more days yet to drain away. It will take very little rain to cause further grief downstream. At least the king tides should have passed?

I took a wee run up through Victoria Park and down through the Bowenvale Valley this morning. Numerous small slips and slumps, and the stream which is usually virtually non existent is still running high 2 days after the rain.
