Almost 1700mm rainfall here in the last 12 months - highest for 9 years. Worse still, the 12-month sunshine total is the lowest for almost 40 years.

Here's NIWA's somewhat belated preliminary, 'July 2017 National Climate Summary'.

A tumultuous month with record breaking rainfall for eastern South Island

The national average temp of 7.9C was 0.1C above normal.

The month's highest temp of 19.2C was recorded at Wairoa on the 20th, and the lowest temp of -14.6C was recorded at Lake Tekapo on the 29th.

Heavy rain around July 21st resulted in quite a few daily and monthly near-records in parts of Canterbury and Otago, including Oamaru's highest monthly and daily July rainfall.
