Really coming down here in Taihape. Power out now for good with a tree falling on the lines right outside the house. Impressive bang and flash. Very heavy right now and it looks to be approaching 30cm now.

If Akld Aero only gets to 10.0C or less, it will be the lowest there since 2011…
Interestingly it's already 9.8C at the airport, didn't think it would rise that fast

Great looking satellite image this morning showing the structure of the low pressure system
BOMCapture.PNG
Roads are atrocious here between Porirua and Kapiti, a lot of surface water on the highway and debris blowing around.

Impressive heavy snow video on nz herald website Mamaku near Rotorua. Looking at Radar it was an isolated patch that hit. Same leading edge coming up from Te Awamutu towards Hamilton now.

Seven sharp reporter tonight asking a farmer from Hanmer if he's seen that much snow before in July , gees that cocky must of thought 'what a complete moron'.
Yes Hanmer Springs ended up getting around 10-15cm total (some has melted) so around a third of what was expected - must be just incredibly hard to predict these kind of events!

Lovely views in Hanmer Springs this morning, even if the epic snow dump didn't occur :)

About once every 5-10 years in the city, last time I think was August 2011. I remember a few light falls in the early 80s when I was living there. But I think you have to go back more than 50 years to find an occurrence of it settling on the ground in Rotorua. (except on the hills)

Certainly a chilly one, down to 7 degrees in Howick now with blustery SW and light rain. Normal July temp at this time of day is around 14.

Rare cold here for the time of day, 7C, precipitation bringing the temperature down from the high around 11C. I see Rotorua is on 3C.

There is talks of Ohakune and some of the surrounding towns having the biggest snowfall since 2001.. The highway cams at www.centralwaikato.co.nz are certainly very impressive.

My inlaws are having a hard time remembering when they last had 25cm snow fall. Much more than that at only slightly higher elevations.

The peak winds in Wellington are over but it's still going strong right now along with persistent rain with some heavy falls. Here's the mt kaukau wind obs showing a 161 km/h gust.

It feels weird to see bands of rain moving up from S-SE on the Auckland radar. Not a common direction for precip to come from here.

We had snow flurries on and off here in taranaki on Thursday morning but other than that the snow line did drop to 400m and top farms at base of mountain got coated for the morning. 110 km wind was max gust here
