The Met Service meteorologists had the Dunedin forecast snow level at 200m a day or two ago.
Usually the forecast snow level is aimed at where snow will settle and give an appreciable accumulation. It can come lower than this level at times. It would appear that with the snow being lower than forecast at Dunedin as you report, that the precip was heavier than anticipated and so the snow level was lower (see my comment on page 6).

Yes the more robust shower clouds tend to produce the lower snow level and the timing of the heavier showers coming through at night.

Most of the wintry stuff is passing well out to the east of us and out to sea.
Been sunny here this morning but frightfully cold in the wind.
No rain or precip since midnight.

Metservice YourWeather has had problems with keeping data up to date for non-metservice stations. It's probably showing readings from yesterday or even earlier

Wonderful to see such vigorous convective activity coming ashore. Heavy hail and flakes with that one, frequent ice and occasionally snowy showers here all day

How much you got over there. Only about two decent snow showers all day here, briefly turned white then melted away.

There's snow laying in a line around the hills here at about 260m asl, only 8mm recorded so far, starting to wonder if this system will produce much the way its going.

When are we looking for the snow showers to stop for Mid-Canterbury/foothills (Sheffield area)?

Wow, ok. Looks like 30cm might actually be realistic here, then.

Very heavy hail at times this afternoon, and it looks like Chch didn't really get above about 4C. Fantastic wintry day's weather with the parade getting a sunny break.

Lawn and roofs getting white with graupel which is still falling;
