A great wintry day today, really. Some snow, some rain, some sleet, some wind, some sun.
Reached a max of 4.3°C, and currently 1.9°C.
Daily high a new record low for the short time that we've been here, and was only beaten twice while we lived in Reefton, and they were both days with a good 5-10cm of snow on the ground. I just wish there had been some decent snow for the kids to go out and play in.

For northern North Canterbury this snow event has been a complete fizzier, Hanmer springs was forecasted up to 50cm, wouldn't have had much more than 5cm, here 20cm received a skiff only. Seven sharp reporter tonight asking a farmer from Hanmer if he's seen that much snow before in July , gees that cocky must of thought 'what a complete moron'.

I did think that reporter was taking the piss. He also mentioned that the media get all excited for an event we call "winter".
All his question in that segment were asked tongue in cheek.

Is Banks Peninsula cutting your region out of the precip stream?

One way of knowing would be taking note of rainfall amounts south side of Banks Peninsula compared to CHCH, but then this area is a long way away from Banks Peninsula too.

Wasn't it one of the amateur Facebook forecast pages that quoted 50cm?

Hard to remember who was predicting what over these last few days, thats disregarding some of the more ridiculous predictions like 2m for Mt Hutt.

I would still love to know where the media got 2m. Certainly not from me. To be fair Hamner Springs did look at getting a hammering a few days ago. Not that we specified it as getting a big dump mind you. I went back through my posts and nothing like that for there. We mentioned they would wake up to snow. Above 400m up to 40-50cm was possible in Mid North Canterbury. Given we have 25cm as an average at 300m im not too unhappy. Still got overnight and tomorrow yet to go. On another note the Radar is picking up increased activity as expected.

Been a cold and icky day in Wellington. First real winters day this year (certainly based on the wind chill temps - and especially on my trip to and from work via motorcycle). On and off hail in the CBD during of the day.

Will be very interesting to see if the Metservice rainfall forecast for tomorrow comes true. In the order of 90mm in town. Models seem to indicate it could, though heavy rain band may move slightly north.

Have brought work laptop home and plan to work from home for the day "just in case"! :>

I see Wellington airport gusting 58knots.

Max for Auckland today is 10C, July 2012 was the last time we had a high that low. Some showers due this afternoon.

A thin frozen skiff of snow out there this morning, well short of the 10cm forecasted for overnight. Just as well too.
