Re: General August Weather
Thanks for the lightning chart Nev.
I did try and get a photo last night but there was no cover from rain and the lightning was irregular.
Auckland sky tower struck at least twice

Raglan looks an ideal spot for a few lightning bolts tonight. 500mb temps -30C!

Video is the easiest way to capture lightning but I prefer setting up a tripod and taking SLR stills which does require shelter from wind and rain and always a lot of luck. I only caught flashes last night.

25mm here, looks like the worst has passed us in Chch and the focus is now inland and to the south where the radar looks pretty ugly.
We've now reached our average annual rainfall for the year.

Heavy and persistent rain since early hours this morning.. you can't tell me this hasn't broken the drought around the Canterbury plains. Much needed rain indeed

A watery sun trying to shine through here, 21mm of much needed rain. The hills and heavy clay soils will surly be full now.

The balance of the month looks to be dominated by vigorous westerly quadrant flows. Not great news for West Coasters, but the Hydro Lakes will start filling so that's good.
This current rain should make for a boomer growth season if this is indeed an early spring, as it is starting to appear to be

Re: General August Weather
A couple of stills I took from a intercloud lightning flash near our house.
Frames are 1/60 of a second apart.
The light intensity was amazing. ( brighter then daylight)
time was around 1800 hours

Looking like Auckland's next thunder day will be at the weekend. GFS currently giving a strong signal for Saturday. There is a weak signal for Thursday evening but I doubt it will come to much.

Re: General August Weather
Quite a few low topped Cbs around Auckland this morning.
I can't remember what these are called - where the top of the Cb no longer has a bottom, I can recall Bob McD mentioning their name at a weather meet long ago
