Re: General September Weather
Hmm went out back at work today (9am) and found a big pile of hail in the drain, been here since 6am and with no rain or Hail...But I did wake up to some loud thunder at around 5am.
Crazy how it's still here!

1046mm for the year so far here. Both GFS and EC showing 60 to 70mm in the next 10 days as well. Sunday to Monday looking quite wet with a good feed of moisture from Tropics into the front .

Re: General September Weather
A mild 16C in Auckland this morning with the passage of the warm front overnight. Thunder activity with the warm front looks to have remained south of Hamilton last night.
Some volatile weather coming up in the second half of September if the 500mb jet stream pattern is anything to go by.

Re: General September Weather
Come to think of it. I think I have heard thunder on most days this month. Of the 14 days it must be around 8-10 days I have heard thunder?

The Blitz showing a few strikes in the north Tasman Sea, no doubt heading towards Auckland
Also some strikes along the Southern alps this evening.

Re: General September Weather
The next organised thunderstorm set up in the modelling for the North Island is Sunday afternoon. Could be localised severe squalls as well.
And then a wintry hail set up on Monday with 500mb around -30C! Earlier this week there was a story in the media about hail damage to vegetable crops occurring in last weekends cold snap.posting.php?mode=edit&f=2&p=170200&sid= ... 9bd53b86e2#

Re: General September Weather
The hail smashed my early crop of summer veges. That's the last time I try an early crop.

Re: General September Weather
Atmospheric river will be running around 30 to 40mm Sunday evening across the North island along with the lift index in the negatives for 24 hours. I think there might be some angry multi cell clusters in the neighbourhood with the cold uppers.
Another point of interest is the Antarctic temps have dropped again and the tropics are well above normal. It's about to get nice and volatile in the mid latitudes in the next 6 weeks.

Re: General September Weather
Hail in that latest batch of showers, a little rumble.
I'm seeing -50c to -60c cloud tops in the Tasman on the northern side of the low off OZ at the moment. Plenty of anvil crawlers and CG's currently coming out of them. Tomorrow looks fairly unsettled in many areas in my opinion.

Re: General September Weather
Really heavy squally shower here just now, tiny hail also. Wasn't expecting anything vigorous today...

Re: General September Weather
Plenty of heating out east now, very clear. Looks like the sea breeze is going well outside. Nice to be in with even a slight chance.
