Yeah! the southerly moved through here a while or so before it hit Ashburton, dropping the temperture down from 19.7C to 14.2C in about a half an hour.
Most of the scud was out to the east of here.
Scud can be the downfall of any southerly change, which happened so many times when we were in West Melton. Had high hopes there, for the day but as soon as you saw scud or fractus, you knew that the southerly change was going to result into something usesless.
I'm not looking forward to anything tomorrow.
Coming onto drizzle here at the moment.

I was out on the Otago Peninsula as the southerly came through, miserable! Better before and after closer to town, although chilly this evening.

Very cold air at the 700mb level over east of the South Island today. As low as -8C. A low topped thunderstorm might occur somewhere, South Canterbury maybe.

Conditional on surface heating.

I see a weak La Nina is officially occurring. That could be good for summer for a lot of regions, particularly inland places like Central Otago.

I can see the cloud to the south. Looks like it'll hit the Lyttelton Harbour area rather than Chch city.

Looks like Lyttelton missed out and it swept over the peninsula instead, the red in the radar petering out over Mt Herbert.

Nice pitures there Steve and Mikey.
I saw it quickly develop on the radar as it moved out of the old TC and headed east over the Rakaia River with lots of red and other colours to denote hail.
Been rather cloudy down here so not expecting much but now picking up a few sferics which I suspect is what Orion is getting/hearing in Ashburton.

That's the source of the thunder I've been hearing; there's still another band of rain approaching from the south however.

There is still alot of instability around but it's cooling off now so not sure how long they will last. The CBS look low topped aswel. Winds turned onshore from The S-SE now to witch the models suggested around this time anyway
