Airmass turning unstable over the North Island for the next couple of days evidenced by the 700-500mb lapse rates which will be around 7C. Isolated thunderstorms could pop up in a few spots, particularly Monday afternoon.

Drizzle 15C in Auckland this morning. 16mm here overnight.

This would now have to be one of the wettest first 9 months of a year for your part of the world you could remember Richard?

No its been a lot wetter than this in past years, we have a watercourse that i seen 1m deep and 4-5m wide flowing at maybe 1/2m a sec. Had a look this morning and there's a bit of water laying in the lowest spots, another 30-40mm and it might start flowing. The water table near the house is at 1.2m have seen it at 30cm.

Went up to Hanmer for the day yesterday - it was wet all the way, with ponding on side of road in places. Good day to soak in the hot pools.

Sun just came out, air temp went to 21.5c and Dew point to 19.4c. Things might erupt this afternoon if this sun creates a nice little convection oven.

My thinking today is for isolated thunderstorm possible north of Helensville and south of Hamilton. The area from Hamilton to Auckland could suffer from moisture mixing out.

There is a PWS near Waimakau (NW Auckland) that has recorded 49mm since 2pm with 19mm last hr.

A dry day for greater Auckland though.

My wife reported lots of thunder and hail at her work in Massey, and later when I drove home from the shore it was very heavy rain with roadside drains overworked, and streams of water over the road. We got about 30mm in a couple of hours at home which appeared to have missed the worst of it.

A few bubbly cloud build ups look likely inland Canterbury today.
Models suggesting thunderstorms around that area this afternoon.
