that was cause of sfreics, and what Orion refered to.
Interesting these thunderstroms occuring to a much norther area than what MS had their warnings out for.
Certainly not looking thunderstormic around here and now it is clearing to the south.

What is it with that area from Tai Tapu to Birlings flat way seeing, like, 5x more thunderstorms than chc city?
Today for the first time I went for a drive just to get under that cloud to get a taste of what this thing called a "thunderstorm" is actually like. o_O

PB has a big affect on the area.. oragraphic lift plays a part in it aswel as BP sucks alot of activity in to. Another storm has developed over the peninsula just now

Dogmelon: I believe its to do with the topographical lift of the area, often in convergence or SW storm set ups you will see them skirt out to birdlings from Ashburton or mt peel. The penninsula often sucks or revamps up storms due to the higher peaks and local winds that shift around Tai tapu. This storm today actually got its juice over land and once it hit banksy it died down. However as I say this another storm has formed on the other side of banks penninsula.

Cheers for the replies. It was good to see the IC lighting, hail and hear some thunder today. If nothing else, the drive was enjoyable though the hail made stone sized chips down to the undercoat in my bonnet only(why not the rest of my paintwork? Odd).

If it’s chipped paint then your whole car is probably covered in dents. Get on a real shallow angle to your roof/bonet and you should be able to see the refraction of the light.

Insurance will fix or pay you out the cost to repair the whole thing

Ive just rung around people in the thunderstorm area to see if they had large hailstones but said they had, had hail but nothing damaging.
I liked the way that the social media had hail and tornado warnings for ChCh today.
I suppose it's best to be safe than sorry. [-X

Hail tends to make indentations rather than chips in the paintwork.

Need fairly big stones to damage a car. 4cm+ I think.

Nice pics all.

I notice the dewpoint temperatures come up this week into next week, it will make for a warmer feel to our weather and probably help generate a Tstorm day or two somewhere around NZ.

I was in Melbourne for the long weekend. Dull weekend over there weather wise. Fell a bit ripped off with 30 the day before we arrived, 26 the day we arrive but had already dropped. Nothing above about 17 while I was there. Cold, windy, cloudy and the odd shower.

Starting to crave a decent summer/spring storm setup.

We struck a 30C day when we were there, a month ago, with people going around in T shirts and shorts but then then the next day it was low to mid teens, with people going around with coats and warmer clothing.

What does la nina mean thunderstorm wise? We have always thought El Nino is the best for SW changes and risks of storms however this has not been the case for a awhile now from past el nino patterns

I would say La Nina means a few thunderstorm episodes over the inland areas as NE air streams are effective at taking moisture inland.

The weather is going to get warmer. South Island could see mid 20's next week.
