Great because i much prefer those slow moving inland storms to fast moving SW setups, still beggars cant be choosers hey.

Re: General October Weather
Easy forecast today.. mild NW start changing S about 3pm. And rain developing..
I see MS going for a low risk of thunderstorms along the change but I don't think much of a chance at all

We're continuing the miserable run of weather here today. 8.9°C and raining.
Temp is dropping too. Fire is lit again, 6th time in the last 10 days.

Re: General October Weather
When I woke up around 9 am and went for a pee, I noticed the 8/8 coverage of low cloud layer covering the sky and thought that thunderstorm chances for today would be nil, so I went back to bed and had a sleep in.mikestormchaser wrote: ↑Wed 25/10/2017 13:48 Easy forecast today.. mild NW start changing S about 3pm. Nice photos Steve. Some outflow there, could it be RFD or is it FFD.
Did Met Service detect any rotation in the storm? With a change of government it is worth a try to get the Met Service data more freely available.

RFD, haven't heard from MS I imagine they would have some very good scans considering how close it is o the radar.NZstorm wrote:Nice photos Steve. Some outflow there, could it be RFD or is it FFD.

No doubt Phil will be lobbying the govt for more open weather data

Thunderstorm now just to the south of Geraldine.
Lots of cloud to cloud but I did see a fork go down just to the NE before low cloud cover moved in.

There is a bit of surface moisture around south Canterbury tonight and that southerly is running into a NE

Its another one of the cold 700mb set ups. They often come in under the radar!

Back on line now as the power went off in Geraldine.
Excellent thunderstorm passed through, Lots of CC and Cg providing some nice 'dump' thunder
Best Ive seen for ages.
Despite the power going off, I'm a happy chappy

Re: General October Weather
Still really going off down there. Heading towards Aarons place at mt Somers.
I would head out but it may die and reduce into the rain band by time I got out there.
It's about an hour away from rolleston id say

Re: General October Weather
Was a good unexpected thunderstorm, went for a drive out to rangitata and parked up by the one way bridge near Geraldine for a while watching it. Had one bolt go down beside us in the paddock at one point while we were driving. Would of tried to get closer to the action but unfortunately didn't have gas for it

Re: General October Weather
All over bar the shouting.
Street flooded again.
21.8mm from this evening's deluge.
Saw the fork which cut the power, to the north of the Talbot Forest area.
Lots of nice pink lightning lots of it reflected in the cloud.
It was one of those Halloweenish sort of thunderstorms.
No hail reported here but will have to see what reports come in.
Anyway, ....nice one

Re: General October Weather
Went for a chase as this storm was just south of me. Saw plenty of frequent lightning and good thunder. Didn't see many Cg's, mostly flashes in the sky but the few Cg's I did see were great! I just didn't manage to capture any, arghhh. I managed to avoid any hail but I'm sure there would have been some out there going by radar. A few live videos on the storm chasers Facebook page, here's probably my only good shot taken somewhere between Mayfield and the SH72 bridge over the Rangitata.
The move to Geraldine is starting to pay off John, two thunderstorms there now although you were in Australia for the last one
