Might Be Some Thunder Around Eastern Districts this WE 14th to 16th Oct.

Chances are looking good for some possible daytime thunderstorm related activity for eastern areas between ChCh and Dunedin over the WE and possibly Monday.

Looks like a decent 500mb system with convection modeled from Dunedin to South Canterbury.

Obviously hail given the chilly airmass and always a low risk of isolated severe hail in these set ups in South Canterbury.

Planning on heading south, prob to timaru then see from there where to go. Can see weaker storms making it as far N as Christchurch though.

Doesn't look like a bad set up. Will head down with Steve this afternoon.

Wind coming from somewhere in the southerly quarter here now; a distinct smell of the sea with it, feels humid.
Lower-level shreddy-looking white clouds observed to the north.

Some semi-decent thunder, lightning, hail and heavy rain passed through here ~2 hours ago. Not a lot of any of it, but just enough to be annoying. Temp dropped from 16°C to 8°C over the course of a couple of hours, but remained NE throughout which was a bit unusual. Ended up with 6.7mm of rain.

An update: it's not over it seems. Not much happened here, but Dunedin got a rather impressive thunder and lightening "hit" according to FB about 40mins ago which knocked out power to everyone north of town for atleast 30mins. We just got ours back on and we're 40km north of Dunedin and it was out for atleast another 20km north of us.

Yes, the Blitz picked up a few srikes around the Dunedin area but it was fairly useless anywhere else.
Never experinced such a boring day. Sorry about getting people excited about the possibilties, although I did overhear in the Geraldine supermarket about some thunder being heard around the Arundel area with a heavy shower there.

On reflection the set up was coming in late and there was too much mid level moisture which generated a lot of altocumulus to block the sun.

Yes, true, sadly that was the case. :(
No decent sun with a lot of mid-range cloud cover.

Apparently there was a storm in northern/northwestern Chch in the small hours overnight today, with thunder and quite abit of hail. I'm in Akaroa, and just got some showers overnight.
