Milford Sound having quite a dry spell, 0.2 mm in the last 10days and possibly staying dry out to the end of the month, there will be the afternoon heat showers over the Mnts.

Drove out to Bank Peninsula and went up Mt Herbert on Saturday. Very dry from Tai Tapu to Little river, the hills looked like what they would late summer.
Not surprised to read Lincoln has only had .4mm this month. Opposite up Herbert, grass very long and green.

Weve had 0.0, Culverden has had 2mm. Starting to really dry out everywhere north of CHCH, fingers crossed that we get at least some of those inland showers that are now likely to pop up for seven days in row.

The month I moved into a house which I built (on the Port Hills) many years ago it was an El Nino season and we had gusty nor'west winds on 29 of the 30 days in the month. The windows in our dining room flexed above about 30 knots, so most days. We got used to it, but having friends over for dinner required a lot of re-assurance on our part. Huey's way of saying welcome to hill living.

Also, when I was very young and having saved up my pocket money took a trip to a marine supply store to buy a handheld anemometer (as weather geek children were prone to do in the 1970s), we had an anticyclone parked over us for two weeks (like the current period) and never saw a wind speed more than about 10 knots.

A pleasant day in Temuka and Geraldine today, quite warm after the clearance of cloud. :D
Seems very hazy towards the coast back here in Ashburton.

I think the best chance for isolated thunderstorms will be over the South Island high country, but as always it doesn't pay to look too far ahead with thunderstorm forecasting.
Certainly looks like showers ( some heavy) over the high country of both Islands through the weekend and into next week.

yes, it was a lovely day here in Geraldine after the persistent onshore lowcloud cover or 'clagg' of the recent days.
Had some friends passing through from Chch off to back home near Queenstown stopping off for tea and it was a nice pleasure to have tea outside for a change.

I see Met Service high's for Twizel/Omarama 30C today. Perhaps record November maximums will be tested in inland South Island today?

The grass is starting to brown off here in Tawa already. We've had little/no rain in the last three weeks, and nothing decent in the forecast for the next 10 days...

I'm not complaining - the period Sept 2016-Sept 2017 was extremely wet and record-breakingly cloudy, with an almost total absence of stable anticyclonic spells. We are overdue for a lot more sunny stable weather yet.

Hot days for Novemeber are not really a rareity. I can remebering Morris Dancing down at Oamaru in 33C heat and really gasping to go to the pub afterwards....
....and tradtionally hot NW days used to go hand in hand with Show Days, which probably was a myth. :-s

You would have been gasping to get to the pub even before you started :p

A Summer feel here today with some humidity, dp 16C. The Auckland temeratures are atleast mid twenties away from the coast. No sea breeze here until about 2.30pm.

I'll have to look throught my diaries to see the year of this'
I can remember when it was very warm down there on the ocassions we went there, and one year a cold southerly came through and wipped up the stalls in Harbour Street 8-o
Went down there for their Victorian/Streampunk fete last WE.
I was the man in a top hat and a'penguin suit' and joined in with the local morris dancers.
Nice cool and overcast day thank goodness.

Grey Lynn recorded 26C today. I see Ardmore Airport in SE Auckland got to 25C.

NIWA say they recorded 33C at Cromwell.

Topped out at 25deg thanks to the sea breeze which is cooler than when it comes from the NE. Noticed a small anvil from a cell in the Molesworth area this evening

I'm skeptical that Oamaru has ever had 33C in November.
