It's a total deluge in Parnell... very close lightning/thunder and continuing small hail.

Quick fire 8mm with plenty of sparks. Some backend mammatus as she drifts past North head

Always Auckland again, but I can't complain after the unexpected TS we had here on Oct 24th :-$ [-X

Tried to log in earlier today and couldn't get the password to work. I was at a power shutdown in West Harbour and we had 5 massive CG strikes between 1129 and 1132 hours within less then 500 meters of our worksite. It was an instant flash and bang, also heavy down pour and some small hail. Really annoying was that I forgot my video camera to capture the strikes as I saw them all. Later at around 1430 hours there was an other active stormcell with good lightning and lots of rain and some hail. Still interesting weather activity for Auckland for a change.

It was an interesting day with the first storm developing around 11am from a sunny start.
I have some free time tomorrow for a chase, tomorrow looking like a similar day in the modelling.

What an amazing day today, was at work for most the day in Parnell where there was plenty of action, but was also getting regular updates from my partner who was in Swanson getting similar but sometimes more intense action.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I spotted some amazing Mammatus clouds on the way home? Picture doesn't do it justice.

Here's a clip of a CB over south Auckland. From the cloud build up to the incredible hail storm that ensued. I've never seen hail this size in NZ before. Some of the chunks were the size of marbles.

Great clip Sandy. Some of those stones could be a couple of cm.

Ive seen bigger mamma than that over West Melton in non-thunderstorm events.

Honestly, some of the chunks were huge, it was only because they were so big, that I didn't venture out to find some to measure. At one stage I was concerned about the cornered plate glass windows. You only have to hit them in the right spot and they smash (speaking from experience).

What an epic sight, made even better by the low topped nature of the cells. You normally see mamatus much higher in the atmosphere

See where the convergence can occur today. With the easterly breeze the west coast of Northland and Waikato will have the best chance for a convergent sea breeze.

After such a wet year to October its amazing how much things have dried up and browned off here in such a short timeframe. Just 9mm of rain here in SW ChCh the past 5 weeks, and a longish looking dry spell ahead of us

Yes, same down here.
Place still looking green though but a lot of irrigators are working to keep the pastures green looking.
Only 12mm of rain on 2 days since that spectacular and brilliant thunderstorm on the evening of the 26th of October, which was not reported by NIWA, mind you it was quite local :D

Spring has finished now.
Have to see what the Summer will bring but the short term looks drier than normal for NZ.

As long as the dry has moist air masses and not dry air masses. Bubbly afternoon slow moving heat showers make up for a long dry spell.

Some Cu development down here at the moment. :D
Might go thundery. Sea breeze convergence looks as though responsible.

It didn't >_<
Not long after posting, the true southerly came in with it's assocoiated low stratus and dropped the temperature by about 5C and stuffed things up.
It was quite pleasant wandering around the stalls at the first day of the Geraldine Arts and Plants Festival this WE, prior to this.

No signs yet to the end of this persistent high air pressure over NZ, though looking hopeful towards the end of the week with some inland shower activity

Looking like high pressure for next 10 days. Wanaka's average Met Service high for the period is 25C.

Subtropical low spoiling weather in the north today. Kerikeri forecast high today just 16C. Unusual for there at this time of year. Foehn SE wind for Auckland this weekend so not so cool 21C.
