Looking like s'westers for Auckland/Waikato for a few days now too, which will add to the dryness.

Good storm in Tauranga area around 7/8 pm. Was playing tennis just north of it [so no photos] Briefly quite severe with constant inter cloud crackling , some rotation observed with inflow clouds and bands around the RFB for about 1/2 hr while pretty much stationary. Some one must have recieved a lot of rain during that hour .Will see what the news has to say tomorrow ,not reports of hail yet ?

Yep, we got flooded again. Not bad inside, got the sandbags over the downstairs doorways in the nick of time. Not sure what I can do to improve it further as the neighbour below has altered the slope and runoff effectively. Ironically I had relaxed as the heavy downpour had eased & it came through after. Sorry, no photo's more important things to do.

Re Tauranga flooding,

27mm in an hour at Welcome Bay is the wettest total I can see with 30mm storm total.

The wasn't enough shear there for a supercell to occur. GFS was running a high shear set up in early runs but had reduced the shear.

Upper flow was about 20 knots yesterday. A supercell set up has 40-50knots mid level flow.

The rate prior to flooding I'd put at more like 50-60mm/hr, I was surprised when suddenly we had a problem.

Very springlike afternoon here. But in saying that seeing as we skipped spring this year, my memory might be off. Anyways, a cloudy and cool morning with some light rain arriving around lunchtime with the wind turning SW but still pretty gentle. However, as the day has progressed, the wind has gotten stronger and stronger, while the sun has become more and more prominent. Max gust I've recorded has been 58km/hr, which definitely undersells it - we've had the power go off twice since 5pm, obviously from the wind.

Talking to someone from Ashburton today and said that when driving through Winslow, the rain was that intense, she had to pull over as the windscreen wipers couldn't cope with the downpour

Looking more and more likely a reasonable rain maker may be on the cards mid next week

Looking like Temps will get above 30C inland North Island Friday. Met Service showing 32C for Te Kuiti.

I think sheltered parts of Auckland like the Clevedon valley could get 30C.

Yes some more heat Thursday - Friday, must say these last two cooler days have been a nice change though, it will slow plant growth a bit, the soil temps have been so high that i noticed a pumpkin runner had grown about 8-10cm in 12 hours, yesterday i put a ruler beside it and it grew 1cm in three hours. About 10 years there was a Jan heat wave where pumpkins had grown a metre over a week period.

Atleast Xmas day weather looks good for most of the country with pre frontal weather, so warm. Sunny for Auckland, Wellington is fine and a little breezy, Chch and Dunedin fine with high cloud, a late day change into Dunedin.
An unsettled spell from Boxing day, hopefully short lived.

May have got about 7mm overnight. Rain was briefly heavy enough to wake up at 5am. Saved the garden for the time being with sprinkler ban in place.
